Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation’s Recycling division has partnered with Advanced Disposal Services, Inc., to operate Advanced Disposal's materials recycling facility (MRF) in Jacksonville, FL.
Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation (SSCC), and Advanced Disposal Services, Inc., will celebrate the grand opening of Smurfit-Stone’s Jacksonville-South materials recycling facility (MRF). Now with two facilities in Jacksonville, Smurfit-Stone is able to make recycling services more accessible to its customers and help Florida work toward its new statewide goal of 75 percent recycling by the year 2020.
The donation of 5,000 tree seedlings to the city reflects Smurfit-Stone and Advanced Disposal’s support of the city of Jacksonville’s sustainability and beautification efforts.
As a member of the American Forest & Paper Association, Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation and other member companies have worked alongside environmental organizations, government and community groups to promote paper recovery. Last year, the AF&PA reported a record 56 percent of the paper consumed in the United States – 54.3 million tons – was recovered for recycling.
Smurfit-Stone is committed to meeting the sustainable packaging requirements of its customers by reducing the fiber content of its packaging, and addressing climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the burning of fossil fuels. As a member of the Chicago Climate Exchange, Smurfit-Stone has already achieved more than three times the voluntary greenhouse gas reductions required for membership by 2010.
In addition to being in the recycling business and using reclaimed paper in its operations, Smurfit-Stone promotes recycling through innovative partnerships with municipalities and waste haulers to enable the recovery of more recyclable materials from the waste stream. Smurfit-Stone’s Recycling division achieved a company record in 2007 by collecting more than 7 million tons of recyclable materials.
The partnership between Smurfit-Stone’s Recycling division and Advanced Disposal allows each company to focus on its core solid waste management and recycling strengths while gaining the greatest benefit for customers and the community as a whole.
Advanced Disposal provides collection, transfer and disposal operations to more than 25,000 commercial customers and 485,000 residential customers throughout Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Alabama. Advanced Disposal collects approximately 5,200 tons of waste per day.
