Three-D Spirits, Inc., Petaluma, CA, has introduced Jolly Roger, what it says is the first and only coconut and key-lime rum. The premium, 50-proof rum blends premium Caribbean rum that is distilled from pure Caribbean sugarcane with all-natural coconut and key lime flavors. When president Dan DaDalt started Three-D in 1996 with his first product, REDRUM tropical fruit-flavored rum, he decided on a reverse-taper bottle with the word REDRUM debossed in large letters running up the side. Jolly Roger is the third product in the line and uses the same bottle. DaDalt worked with glass distributor Demptos Glass (www.demptos.com) to source the first bottle and, after Demptos was bought by Saxco, Intl. (www.saxcointl.com), it worked with Saxco for subsequent products. Saxco sourced the Jolly Roger bottles from O-I, (www.o-i.com) in Europe. Because Three-D wanted white bottles, O-I sends them to Quest, LLC (www.quesstllc.com), who applies an organic, water-based powder coating. The bottles are transported through a lehr oven, which evaporates the water and adheres the coating to the bottles. Quest also applies front and back pressure-sensitive labels, which are supplied by Tapp Technologies, Inc. (www.tapptech.com), to the bottles. The front label features a matte-varnish overcoat with an embossed foil border, a crossed swords design and other elements. Tapp prints the ink portion of the four-color front labels on uncoated vellum paper from Avery Dennison (www.averydennison.com) and applies the foil and embossing elements using a finishing press, after which the labels are die cut. The stamping and embossing dies are supplied by DeCrevel Engraving (www.decrevel.com). The back labels are flexo-printed in two colors. Caps are supplied by Alcan Packaging Capalux, Inc.
