Amazonia Nutrients finds perfect Harmony in sustainable packaging

Amazonia Nutrients Inc. haircare products are free of parabens, colorants and artificial fragrances. Instead, the haircare product line uses natural ingredients native to the world's largest rainforest. Amazonia Nutrients says that it also contributes a portion of its revenues to The Nature Conservancy whose mission is to preserve plants, animals and the natural communities that represent the diversity of life on earth.
When Amazonia Nutrients was getting ready for its Summer 2007 product launch on the Internet, the co. wanted to make sure the packaging it used would be as environmentally friendly as the products the containers would hold. For assistance with identifying containers that are both recyclable and protect the beauty line's distinctive ingredients, Amazonia Nutrients turned to Sustainable Packaging Coalition (www.sustainablepackaging.org) member TricorBraun (www.tricorbraun.com). Together, they found five protective and sustainable packages that harmonize perfectly with Amazonia Nutrients' green philosophy: 8-oz aluminum cans for shampoos, conditioners and detangling sprays; 2-oz aluminum cans that contain shine serums; 8-oz high-density polypropylene bottles for color protecting shampoos and conditioners; 4-oz low-density polyethylene tubes for texturizing control gels, wearable styling treatments and hydration masks; and 8-oz TricorBraun Coronado jars with 4-oz inner jars and 70-mm polyethylene closures for intensive deep conditioners. MeadWestvaco's Calmar (www.calmar.com) Harmony polypropylene pumps are used to top all of the shampoos, conditioners and detangler containers; dispensing pumps from Seaquist Perfect Dispensing (www.seaquistperfect.fr/uk) are used to top the hair serum containers.

This might be a great and partly-sustainable way to package their
products if the plastic was actually recycled in practice. But it''''''''s not.
Polypropylene is not recycled by most municipalities--especially when
it is such a dark color (dark brown). So this is bunk. The packaging is
material intensive to boot. I can understand why polypropylene
wouldbe specified for such products, but was HDPE not a viable option?
It''''''''s commonly recycled. And is the aluminum virgin stock or made from
recycled sources? Sustainability means that the result is ecologically,
socially, and economically beneficial--not solely environmentally
(ecologically). This sort of thing needs to be adressed through
education. Is it a topic at the upcoming sustainable packaging
convention? Otherwise this is just misleading to the consumers, i.e.
greenwashing. Obviously that wasn''''''''t the intention, so education is in
order.
