ProMat Marches On, Despite Economic Slowdown

Record number of exhibitors and attendees at materials-handling tradeshow in Chicago

By Lauren Hartman, Senior Editor -- Packaging Digest, 1/13/2009 12:41:00 PM

This week’s ProMat 2009 show in Chicago, sponsored by the Material Handling Industry of America [MHIA) (www.mhia.org), hosts a record number of exhibitors and attendees. The four-day show offers visitors more than 800 exhibits spotlighting a variety of materials handling, logistics, manufacturing and supply chain services, innovations and advances. This year, ProMat claims a record number of 100 on-floor educational seminars and 35,000 visitors. The 300,000-sq-ft show floor also features distribution, assembly and IT solutions for the supply chain.

From developments in automation, palletizing and depalletizing, picking, vehicle-mounted, mobile computing and automatic storage/retrieval, to new conveying and materials transport systems, radio-frequency identification (RFID) enhancements, computerized warehousing methods, robotic pick-and-place, parts assembly and delivery, and rack storage, shelf organization, warehouse management and lean, green processes, the show is filled with technologies, practices, products and much more that can help packagers “build the workforce of the future,” which is the title of Tuesday’s  keynote presentation, to be moderated by television journalist Forrest Sawyer. Consisting of a panel of four experts at the forefront of workforce issues, the presentation will be moderated by renowned business journalist Forrest Sawyer. The keynote will provide a real-world perspective detailing how the workforce is changing and will offer practical ideas to help adapt to the changes.

The MHIA, which also publishes literature and standards, provides e-learning tools and keeps a vast library of material handling and logistics resources, is providing a bookstore in Booth 2300 at the front of the ProMat 2009 show floor. Visit www.mhia.org for further information on MHIA educational resources.

Divided into solution-specific sections including manufacturing and assembly solutions; fulfillment and delivery; and information technology sections, the show floor simplifies finding solutions visitors are seeking.

An extensive educational conference runs concurrently with ProMat and focuses on improving productivity in material handing and logistics. Topics include: implementing world-class warehouse management system functionalities in a small/medium DC, Automated Print Production in the 21st Century; Breakthrough Technologies in Material Handling; 10 Basic Steps to Sustainability; and How Asset Tracking Can Help Your Business, among many others.

To learn more, visit the website of PD’s sister publication, Modern Materials Handling at www.mmh.com or MHIA’s website at www.mhia.org.
