Unilever to phase-out Smart Choices label

Program logo dropped until FDA issues further guidance.

David Bellm -- Packaging Digest, 10/27/2009 1:17:31 PM

Unilever says it has long been committed to clear, transparent nutritional information for consumers, and that the company therefore welcomes the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) announced plans to develop standardized criteria on which future front-of-package nutrition or shelf labeling will be based.

In light of the FDA's announcement, Unilever has decided to transition out of the current Smart Choices Program (SCP) logo. Unilever awaits FDA's direction on future front-of-package nutrition labeling.

Unilever will continue to support the SCP coalition's nutritional and scientific efforts while awaiting FDA guidance.
