Alcoa to idle smelting operations in Italy while appealing EC ruling
Alcoa announced it will temporarily idle production at its two aluminum smelters in Fusina and Portovesme, Italy. The curtailment is a result of uncertainty in obtaining future power supply for the smelters at competitive rates and the financial impact of today's European Commission (EC) decision that Italy's extension of the existing electricity tariff after 2005 did not comply with European Union (EU) state aid rules and that a portion of the benefit received by Alcoa must be refunded. Alcoa is appealing the decision.
FPI releases ovenable packaging guidelines
The Foodservice Packaging Institute (FPI) released its new "Guidance Document For Qualifying Ovenable Packaging," which provides guidance to those seeking to qualify single-use packaging products for ovenable applications. This new guidance document is a major revision to the "Test Procedure Guidelines to Qualify Dual Ovenable Containers," originally developed in 1988 by FPI in conjunction with Cornell University's Department of Nutrition. It is intended to be applicable to all single-use packaging products, for use in consumer, commercial and institutional ovens. These include conventional or range, convection, conveyor and other ovens used in households and the foodservice industry. The 2009 document was produced by FPI's Foodservice Packaging Standards Council, comprised of industry representatives from both member and non-member companies.
