Georgia-Pacific’s Pat Smorch presents at Sustainability in Packaging Conference 2010

Applying sustainability, convenience and branding to retail ready packaging.

-- Packaging Digest, 3/11/2010 12:35:15 PM

Even as club stores see their decade of unprecedented growth gradually slow, the popularity of bulk shopping continues to transform the way consumers interact with secondary packaging. With this in mind, Pat Smorch, Director of Packaging Sustainability at Georgia-Pacific’s Innovation Institute®, will discuss the application of primary packaging principles to Retail Ready Packaging (RRP) in a presentation at the fourth annual Sustainability in Packaging Conference (March 15-17; Orlando, Florida).

Titled “Spotlight on Secondary Packaging: Applying ‘Primary’ Principles to Retail Ready Packaging,” the presentation will address how CPGs can infuse their secondary packaging with the branding, convenience and sustainability promises of their primary packaging to ensure consumers the most positive product experience. With a special focus on RRP, Smorch will discuss how the sustainability-enhancing principles which guide the development of primary packaging, such as material reduction and lightweighting, must also be applied to secondary packaging to optimize the success of the package as it is handled through the supply chain and in the retail environment.

The presentation is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 17, 2010. Online registration for the conference is available at www.sustainability-in-packaging.com.

Pat Smorch is responsible for Georgia-Pacific’s packaging sustainability initiative, the division design team and the Packaging Systems Optimization (PSO™) program. Smorch brings more than 15 years of experience in the packaging industry, including packaging development and research roles at Pechiney Plastic Packaging and ConAgra Foods.
