Sustainable packaging: Command launches program to divert plastic bags from the environment
-- Packaging Digest, 5/20/2010 12:57:17 PM
Command Packaging’s new “Bags from Trash” concept is being launched to bring awareness to retail stores, restaurants, and consumers about the advantages of recycled plastic in retail and restaurant bags.
According to Joe Greene, Ph.D. Dept. of MEM Engineering and Manufacturing Technology at the California State University, Chico, Command Packaging’s high usage of recycled materials results in retail and restaurant carry bags with lower Green House Gas (GHG) Emissions, lower solid waste generation, and zero water waste as compared to competing solutions.
With legislated demands to lower green house gas emissions and decrease retail stores' and restaurants' consumption and waste, businesses need to truly understand the environmental impact of their packaging and enlighten consumers that their retail store and restaurant bags actually support the green claims they make.
Through the “Bags from Trash” recycled bag concept, Command’s Recycling Center (CPR3) can source and guarantee the recycled materials directly by partnering with local businesses and communities to collect their plastic recyclables (including plastic bags) and remanufacture the materials into useful new recycled reusable carry bag solutions; their recyclable plastic bags, their plastic trash turned into their new "recycled, 100% recyclable, reusable" retail or restaurant carry bags over and over again.
CPR3 is breathing new life into retired plastic bags and other recyclables to create a truly sustainable, closed loop, zero waste, plastic bag program made in the USA.
With so many businesses eager to find a better way of disposing their plastic waste, it’s more possible to keep the cost of post-consumer and post-industrial recycled materials competitive. By replacing virgin resin with the abundant supply of recycled plastic, Command Packaging can significantly reduce our customers’ costs for retail and restaurant bags. Retail stores and restaurants of all sizes, including Noodles & Co.(national restaurant chain), Delta Airlines (major airlines), Cost Plus World Market (national retail store chain), Big 5 (national retail store chain), and The Cheesecake Factory (national restaurant chain), are taking advantage of Command’s ‘Bags from Trash’ concept and receiving the benefits of packaging made from as much as 80% to 100% recycled material (Recycled and 100% recyclable retail and restaurant bags). As other businesses follow suit, more plastic will be diverted from the landfill.
Pete Grande, CEO of Command Packaging, believes, “When businesses agree to divert their own waste to suppliers like Command Packaging, who in turn will use this waste to manufacture the packaging that they are already using, we will create a closed-loop, sustainable solution that will help the environment, reduce costs, and create more green jobs.”
Grande further stated, “The goal now for retail stores and restaurants is to create a truly integrated business model that can make the creation of a closed loop, zero-waste plastic bag program a reality.” It is Grande’s belief that “With our ability to collect – manufacture – recycle, we are satisfying the economic demands of retail stores and restaurants while addressing the environmental concerns.”
