Sustainable packaging: What lies ahead?

Jenni Spinner, Senior Editor -- Packaging Digest, 12/4/2012 7:00:00 AM

Sustainability in Packaging webcastWhile sustainability is growing ever louder as a packaging buzzword, a wealth of questions about the concept and its potential impact on the industry remain.

On Thursday, Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. CST, Packaging Digest Executive Editor Lisa Pierce will host a dynamic webcast discussion of sustainable packaging's future, framed by the results of our exclusive 2012 Sustainable Packaging Survey (click here to register). Among the findings:
• The vast majority (94 percent) of packaging professionals indicate sustainability comes into play when making packaging decisions.
• Most respondents (71 percent) believe that lack of recovery of materials is a barrier to improving sustainability of packaging
• Nearly all respondents (96 percent) believe it is vital to significantly improve packaging recycling over the next five years as part of overall sustainability efforts.

Gail Tavill, vp of sustainable development for ConAgra Foods and president of AMERIPEN (American Institute for Packaging and the Environment) will offer insight into the crucial role that packaging professionals play in increasing sustainability on a global scale. Also, Nina Goodrich, executive director of GreenBlue and program director of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, will discuss how life-cycle analysis can help guide increasing sustainability in packaging.

Registration for the Dec. 6 webcast is now open; click here to sign up for the event. There is no cost to participate.
