Olive oil housed in tastefully elegant, award-winning bottle

Hojiblanca olive oilHojiblanca olive oilCreating packaging for olive oil can be a challenge. For one, the flavor of the product is affected by light, so the package must be dark or opaque to protect the precious cargo inside. Secondly, the number of brands competing for shelf space is large, so any new products must stand out to have a fighting chance.

Hojiblanca USA Inc., the stateside subsidiary of the largest producer of olive oil and table olives in Spain, created a new 17-oz bottle that succeeds on all levels. Nicknamed "Dama" (Spanish for "lady) by designer Fabrizio Libanio, the bottle resembles the slender, curvaceous profile of a 1950s Hollywood starlet. The shrink-sleeve label decorates all four sides of the bottle. The dark-green glass bottle, provided by Saint Gobain-Vicasa (www.saint-gobain.com) in Spain, was selected because of its light-blocking qualities, and sustainability.

"Glass containers make for a truly sustainable package," says Enrique Escudero, Hojiblanca USA CEO. "Using glass cuts down on CO2 emissions, and recycling glass has big environmental payoffs, saving raw materials while decreasing the demand for energy."

The package design has received a Worldstar packaging award in the Foodstuff category. A PET version of the Dama bottle also is produced.
