'Sustainable' SunChips packs include 'Green-e' designation

-- Packaging Digest, 10/1/2007

The SunChips brand of snack chips from Frito-Lay North America, Purchase, NY, will be one of the first national consumer goods packaged to include the Green-e logo on its packaging. The updated packaging will be printed with the logo, a designation from the Center for Resource Solutions, used with certified renewable energy certificates (RECs). The Center for Resource Solutions is a national, nonprofit organization that administers the Green-e program, and works to increase the amount of renewable energy used worldwide.

“Including the Green-e logo on the SunChips line gives the brand an opportunity to communicate its commitment to support green energy, and hopefully will encourage consumers to take their own steps to make our world a brighter place,” says Gannon Jones, vp, marketing, of Frito-Lay North America.

SunChips brand communications will focus on supporting green energy through the purchase of RECs to match 100-percent of the electricity needed to produce SunChips snacks in the U.S. Electricity is one source of energy used to produce SunChips snacks. The RECs the brand purchases are part of the PepsiCo REC purchase, announced earlier this year, which matches the purchased electricity use of all of Frito-Lay's U.S.-based facilities, including those manufacturing sites that produce the snacks. The purchase of RECs helps drive the development of additional renewable energy capacity. The brand's Green-e packaging is part of PepsiCo's efforts in environmental sustainability.
