Not your daddy's beige box

In terms of packaging, everyone loves to point at Apple Computers. While I can't disagree that their packaging has some major appeal, I've got to give some recognition to Microsoft.

Microsoft has, for as long as I can remember, been the king of bland and boring packaging.  I can't really blame them though, as for quite some time it was the norm to package your products in a fairly oversized paperboard box. Times have changed though and Microsoft has definitely gone above and beyond the norm for modern software packaging.

These days most software you find on the shelves comes in an oversized DVD case of sorts with a paperboard overwrap. Microsoft has definitely broken the mold with their new software packaging, though.  The Microsoft office and Windows Vista line of products currently comes packaged in a very styling clear plastic package. These new packages are stylish and definitely give an upscale look to these products.

The coolest feature of the package though is the way it opens. The disc and paperwork tilt out of the side of the package, which is very impressive visually.  This package is not only robust enough to protect the software disc inside but does it in a manner that is stylish and conveys a very upscale feel for the product. I definitely commend the team at Microsoft for their unique package design.
