How to Pick Environmentally Smart Packaging
August 4, 2008

Want some real techniques for choosing packaging that’s better for the environment? Take a look at Joel Makower’s great article, “Think Inside the Box.” It’s chock full of great methods that any business can use to make more environmentally sound packaging choices.
The ideas are especially valuable for smaller companies. Such leaner organizations generally don’t have the luxury of Corporate Sustainability Guidelines and “Green Initiatives” to help them make the best decisions about such things.
And while you’re at it, check out Makower’s related article “Ship It, Ship It Good.” It offers some great insight on how different shipping methods – planes, trains, trucks, etc. -- can have an enormous effect on the environmental impact of moving your goods around.

Another great choice for eco-friendly options is the re-pulpable pallet from Natural Source Printing (www.naturalsourceprinting.com). At a lower cost and lower weight this pallet is a no brainer. The company is sending out samples of mini-pallets to test. (also ask about FiberStone tree-free paper made from stone).

Consider the amount of packaging. Simple, low-waste packaging is a very productive method for overall packaging waste reduction. Recyclablability is also key. PakTech plastic carrier handles are great solutions for various container bundling projects.

Reducing the amount of packaging used along with the recyclability of the remaining material is key, as long as extra waste is not created by product damage or increased labor. For high volume fulfilment operations, I challenge anyone to find a more environmentally smart packaging solution than I-Pack and Ultipack from Sealed Air(www.bplus-equip.com)

If you are in a high mix SKU manufacturing environment, and use corrugated boxes and parts, there is a Lean Solution for your packaging needs. Take a look at a Packsize On-Demand corrugated packaging system (www.Packsize.com). There is no capital expense, so your savings are instantaneous, and the supply chain is greatly simplified.

Another way is to look deeper into the actual manufacturing. Keteca Water Works www.ketecawaterworks.com has several new lines of water based green cleaners for pressroom cleaning and other cleaning needs. The products meet SCAQMD and several other enviro reqs.
