Fun things to do at work when bored … vintage packaging
July 17, 2008

Need a break in your day? Who doesn’t? But you can’t just stand around the coffee machine gabbing all morning – too obvious to your boss. And how long can you surf your usual stack of bookmarks?

With that in mind, I’ve found the perfect little diversion for packaging professionals. Best of all, it’s not just extremely entertaining. It’s also educational and truly useful.

I’m talking about the wonderful vintage packaging sites I’ve found recently. These are sure to please anyone who works with packaging. They also offer a lot of insight and inspiration to those looking for design ideas.

First up is The American Packaging Museum, a stylish site with a nicely done gallery of vintage packages from throughout the 20th century. A great starting place for anyone interested in vintage packaging.

Okay, now for something completely different. Vintage Skivvies is an intriguing collection of … you guessed it … vintage underwear boxes! (Are you really surprised that the internet has such a thing?) Intriguing and visually compelling, not to mention a great lesson in how things have changed since these packages were current.

Last but certainly not least is Krazy Kids Items, a delicious gallery of vintage kid’s packages. It's an absolute phantasmagoria of colors and kitsch. Anyone who likes packaging is sure to get stuck here for ages.

Enjoy!
