How to open clamshell packaging
September 15, 2008

So who hasn’t wrestled with those insanely hard to open clamshell packages? And if you’re in the business of making clamshell packaging or packaging stuff in them, you’ve surely been assaulted by consumers giving you an earful of how much they dislike these staples of today’s retail shopping experience.

Well, fear not. I just found out we’ve all been approaching these little buggers with the wrong attitude – that Western assumption that everything should be easy to use, instant to learn, and immediate in its gratification.

In Asia, parts of Europe, and other chronically more cultured parts of the world, it’s just assumed that a certain amount of “learning” will have to go into using anything. This, for example, is why many German automobiles are so impossibly unintuitive that they demand approximately 47 hours of study before the user fully understands how to turn on the radio.

Us silly Americans just hope to buy things, bring ‘em home, start using them. When will we learn?

But attitudes are slowly changing. Witness these fine crash courses on how to open clamshell packaging safely and effectively. Our redemption is near!

Weapons in the Fight Against Hard-to-Open Packaging

And why you may not need the above methods for very much longer …. (the end of clamshell packaging?)

Jim - GEAF North America commented:

Until clamshells are displaced, PET and RPET are one environmentally preferred alternative, and in certain grades and gages can even be more easily opened. At GEAF we have been successfully RF sealing these materials for many years. Contact us to review your sealing challenges !
