Cool Packaging Design ... from Milwaukee?

February 9, 2009

Good old Beertown — Milwaukee. About an hour and a half away from Packaging Digest’s suburban-Chicago headquarters lies the majestic home of myriad golden-suds brands, Harley Davidson, and the fictional utopia of The Fonze and the rest of the immortally sunny Happy Days gang (not to mention bubbly spinoffs Laverne & Shirley).

And not much else. Sadly, this rather pleasant, very livable town doesn’t have a lot of significant claims to fame. And, as you can see from the above short list of notables, the few things the town is known for aren’t all that hip or trendy.

So imagine my surprise when I stumbled into this nice collection of student packaging design work from Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) posted on Flickr.

Makes me look at our friendly neighbor to the north in a different light. Could it be that the Land of Beer & Brats has a tasty hip side?

Sure seems like it. Check it out.

Yeah, the syringe is interesting. But hey, that's one of the great things about student work -- not shackled with so many limitations. I think it'd cause a few people to choke on their lattes in the typical corporate approval meeting.

Phil Belair's class was great, and enjoyable. He brings a lot of experience in professional practice to the classroom. Amazing what sophomores and juniors (and seniors) can do. Nice work.

I went back to MIAD to take that packaging class after I graduated and practiced for a while. MIAD [finally] did something right by hiring him as a full professor.

David, thanks for the compliments. I posted the flickr work on behalf of our students at MIAD. You can see more of it at miad.edu under the student portfolio section. Thanks for the great responses! I knew I was probably pushing some buttons with that post. But it's all completely meant in fun -- I know Milwaukee is an awesome city. My sister-in-law is from there. My brother and her live in a nice place to the northwest of the city. I like going up there -- great town.

David- I think you'd be surprised to see the creativity and innovation that comes out of Milwaukee (and many other cities with similar roots for that matter.) No doubt it has its roots in Happy Days and frothy suds, but with schools like MIAD, architects the like of Santaigo Calatrava leaving their mark and countless creative minds making Milwaukee home the city has come a long way. You have an open invitation to make the drive up and see it firsthand - I'd be happy to show you the town!
