The Future of Packaging Design?

February 24, 2009

Here’s an interesting video, demonstrating a concept for smart packaging, created by Minneapolis based Experience Design firm CAPSULE.

I’ve never heard of "The Futuristic Packaging Show," referenced in the description so I’m thinking it’s a hypothetical fabrication for the sake of showcasing the agency and its ideas. Whatever the context though, there are some interesting things going on here. Take a look. And I have a few more thoughts about it too, below the video:

Okay, whether or not these sorts of features will – or should — someday be implemented in packaging can be debated. But it’s interesting either way, raising questions about just how broad of a role packaging might have in the future. As with so many other developments, new technologies bring about new applications, which creates a pull for new technologies – perpetuating the cycle continuously.

And regardless, It’s certain that marketers, designers, etc. will be at least considering such things in the relatively near future. The technology for all these things is either here now, or just around the corner.

When you get down to it, is this “the future” or “the extended present.”

Hi David, This was shown at the Packaging That Sells Expo. It's a hypothetical product at this point. We got a great response there and our designers loved working on it. Thanks for showing it! Yvette, Capsule. capsuleshak.typepad.com
