Box wine gets its own website

June 11, 2009

From time to time I feature boxed wine package designs in this blog. And with good reason – as this packaging form evolves and gains greater acceptance, the designs are starting to really get quite interesting.

It’s clear that box wine is moving beyond the cheap-spirits-in-bulk stigma that has marked it for years. There are some really nice packages, and they’re being used to contain pricier and pricier wines.

Okay, before all the glass folks jump all over me, I’m not saying “boxes” (there are now cylinders and many other shapes) will ever replace glass completely. I think they both have their place.

But the users of alternative packaging for wine are starting to assert themselves more as a united front, much like glass packaging manufacturers have done for years. As evidence of that, check out this press release I got the other day.

And while you’re at it, check out the site it talks about – lots of really nice packaging featured.

Because Packaging Digest focuses on the latest innovations in the packaging industry, I would like to inform you of aboutboxedwine.com. AboutBoxedWine.com, a fun, interactive website dedicated to everything and anything about boxed wine. Visitors to the website will be able to learn why boxed wine is good and discover new wineries offering their wines in bag-in-box.

AboutBoxedWine.com provides a growing, global list of all wines that are available boxed.  Visitors are also encouraged to rate and comment on wines they’ve tried and participate on the discussion boards.

This website also has dedicated sections for wineries, bars & restaurants, distributors and the media. Each of these sections provided targeted messages that explain the benefits of bag-in-box wine to their tier of the distribution network.

Hi "Wine Snob." I suspect box wine will continue to gain acceptance in the lower end of the market, particularly as the recycling issues are overcome. And box wine will probably move somewhat up the price range as time goes on. But I think at a certain price range, premium packaging -- glass -- is expected. Like so many other technologies, boxes probably won't entirely replace their more traditional predecessor.

I agree, Brad. Seems like every new technology is "The End." And then it becomes normal and people can move on to dishing on the next disruptive technology. The cycle goes on. I think box wine is OK. Glass will always have its place ... just maybe not for ten dollar spirits.

David, Several years back I was in Napa when screw top bottles were starting to make inroads against the hallowed cork. Everyone we talked to at the wineries believed that screw tops would be the end of the world as we know it. Fast forward a few years, and you see screw tops more and more on very nice wines. I think once the "box shocks" wear off, this new approach to packaging will gain acceptance. It's practical and economical - a tough combination to beat in a recession.

david, where do you see box wine going in the future? it seems to be rather steady, but will it further erode bottled packaging or remain a niche for bulk wine? I'm also curious to see if there are environmental benefits here. Regards.

Glad to see wineries are putting higher quality product in boxes. Cool site to. I commented on a few wines and rated a few more. Things have come a long way since the days were only cheap wine was available in huge boxes :)
