Divided nation unites around new Color of the Year

pantone_turquoise_swatch_v2.jpgAfter some four decades of violence, members of the World Turquoise Federation (WTF) finally put down their brightly-hued assault rifles as Pantone announced this morning that Turquoise is the Color of the Year for 2010.

Pantone — the Global Authority on Color — announced Turquoise as the winner, in a press release saying “Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world …”

Nonetheless, rioting is said to have broken out in several cities around the world just minutes after the announcement.

“It’s about time,” said Colonel V, of the WTF. “There are more shades of green than any other color in the spectrum — and yet turquoise has been kicked around and ignored for 45 years.”

The once-popular greenish hue was officially declared Out of Style on September 23, 1964, but was given a brief reinstatement to “Like, Really In” status for a 17 month period between March, 1984 and July, 1985.

“In many cultures, Turquoise occupies a very special position in the world of color,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “It is believed to be a protective talisman, a color of deep compassion and healing, and a color of faith and truth, inspired by water and sky.”

“We took it to the street,” said Colonel V. “I feel bad for the innocent lives that were sacrificed in the struggle. But Turquoise is finally getting what it deserves.”

Does this mean that we’ll actually see turquoise used in packaging designs other than Arizona Iced Tea?

Maybe. It’s a whole different world now.
