Design for enormous Neil Young boxed set gets Grammy nomination

December 9, 2009

neil_young_boxed_set_v2.jpgGary Burden’s design of the Neil Young Archives, Volume 1 has been nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package category.

Kinda’ funny though that super hippy Neil Young would consent to a package that appears to use about 20 pounds of material to package an artform that’s more often digitally downloaded these days.

Okay — I was just a mere baby when Neil Young came on the scene, so what could I really, deeply understand about the ethos of the boomer generation?

But seeing this monstrosity, I may have a hard time not rolling my eyes and gagging the next time he goes into a rant about the environment.

What's a real nuisance is trying to get a the various DVDs to play them. And put them back after. I'm tempted to put them into regular CD cases just for convenience.

I Agree. The self indulgence and size is matched only by Mr. Young's ego.

Good point Josh -- this thing will hang around on shelves, eBay, thrift stores etc. for decades. But part of what bugs me about this thing is the sheer indulgence of it. The idea of rock and roll as the subject of massive boxed Commemorative Editions surely wasn't what all those mud-slathered hippies had in mind at Woodstock. Young seems to have shaken that mud off and fallen in-step just fine.

In any other product I would agree with the viewpoint. I am no fan of Neil (Southern Man don't need him round, anyhow) but in all fairness, collectors items/sets sit in a collection or shelf and are therefore not committed to a landfill such as other packaging.

Just another limousine liberal hypocrite....excellent observation, David. I'm a boomer and I don't understand it. My eyes have dislodged from their nerves from rolling and I have nothing left in the stomach to gag up with these sanctimonious losers preaching.

FRMowat -- take a look at this thing. It is H U G E ! ! And there are what, maybe six CDS in it? Even outside of the environmental issues, this collection's sheer massiveness is pomposity at its utmost. Coming from any artist, this thing would look silly.
