Packaging design: Fun with technology

April 14, 2010

medea_vodka_ticker_bottle_v.jpgAs much as a lot of people love to be surprised by new technology, to me the real power in them is in their pricing. It’s usually when something gets cheap enough that things get interesting with a technology.

And then they reach the point of near disposability. That’s a whole different level of accessibility that makes for interesting combinations.

Take for instance Medea’s LED ticker vodka-bottle design, which is making the blog and social media circuit heavily right now. If you haven’t heard about it yet, it’s a bottle of spirits adorned with a programmable screen that can display customizable messages.

Two things come to my mind immediately:

(1) As prices of other technologies drop, what kind of other things will be cleverly adapted to packaging?

(2) What kind of obscene messages will people be putting on this thing?

The appearance of high resolution printers is right up this alley. Now packers can print detailed images with encoded information on boxes.
This of course replaces the old technology of large dots forming a string of characters for identification. PTIPackaging.com has both types of printers and I have personally seen the amazing detail and possibilities that new technology can offer the industry.
It is time to move forward!
