The most annoying packages in the world

June 8, 2009

I know it’s very trivial, but to me, among the most annoying packages in the world are the foil-wrapped, single-serve pieces of butter that are served in many restaurants, including very upscale, white-tablecloth eateries. I defy anyone to open one of these packages without getting butter on their hands. An obvious solution would be to package individual servings of butter in small squeeze pouches like you have for ketchup, mustard and the like. Just tear off the tops and squeeze out the butter. Even if they are frozen very hard, the heat of your hands on the pouches would soften the butter along the inside surface of the pouch, so the butter will squeeze out easily.

Another very annoying package also has its roots in the dairy industry—the pull-open gabletop carton, where you have to pull the flaps on one side apart to open the carton. Once the flaps are apart, you squeeze them, and they are supposed to open. Sometimes this even works, but you usually have to use a knife or some other implement to open the flaps, and this generally tears the surface of the paperboard, so it gets soggy from the product. This is not only unpleasant; it is also unsanitary. In this case, the industry has come up with a perfect answer—a screw cap. It’s just a wonder why anyone still uses the old pull-open cartons.

On the other side of the picture, one of the great packaging innovations, maybe the best of all time, is the screw-cap beer bottle. No more church key or broken teeth.

How about you people out there. There must be package you love or hate. Let me hear about them.

The plastic bags within cereal boxes are the worst. Not all are created equal and some are sealed so securely, you cannot pull the seal apart without ripping the bag halfway down. On the flip side, kudos to General Mills for coming up with a better flap on the top major flaps. The cutout shape vs the perforated tab insert is a much better solution.

To me, the shredded cheese bags with cheap press-to-close zippers are a nightmare to reclose, especially for children who can't wait to throw it back in the fridge. Thank God, Kraft understood it and are using sliders.

Jack, When it comes to the most annoying packaging, you and I are in the same location, but working with different products. For me, it's those little thermoformed creamer packages. I cannot open one without squirting myself, my dining companions, and/or someone at the next table with the contents.

I hate the new way of sealing the ends of plastic bags such as those you get chips in. 15 or so years ago I remember buying a packet of chips and you grab the sides of the bag, and pull, and the join along the top would break neatly in half, because they were sealed with glue or something that made the join weaker than the actual crisp packet itself. Now a new design seems to dominate where they are melted together, making the join far stronger than the actual bag itself. With the new ones if you try to pull the join apart usually the bag tears away from the join and your crisps spill every where. Often the only way to open is to cut off the top with a pair of scissors.

Elizabeth Arden's Prevage - a disaster on all counts. Hard to hold, hard to open, the actual product component is usually defective and the entire process is very frustrating and for the price, maddening. And impossible to read the instructions.

Movies or Video Games that have tamper resistent seals on ALL 3 SIDES...the seal is so thin that you struggle to get a fingernail under it or have to resort to surgery on it with a kitchen knife!

Those PET containers that require sheet metal cutters and a first aid kit to open!

Toy packaging! Toys that are strapped onto carboard with thousands of plastic ties that you have to undo from the back. You have hand cramps by the time you are finished!

I find all semi hard thermoformed plastic packs annoying - like they use for USB sticks. I know they are designed to prevent theft of these small articles, but you need a knife and scissors to get to the item you just purchased....attempts have been made to make these packs more easy to open, but so far, I've not experienced one that I think succeeded in this.
