Zip-up potato chips

July 29, 2009

As I have mentioned previously, I am a potato chip fanatic, so when my daughter asked me why potato-chip manufacturers don’t put zippers on their bags of chips, I didn’t have an answer. Personally, it doesn’t cause me a great of discomfort, because I go through a bag of chips before it has time to get stale. My daughter has much more self discipline than I, so she can eat a handful of chips and then stop. But she then has to fold over the top of the bag, and then put a clip on it to keep the chips fresh. Certainly not an excruciating requirement, but annoying never-the-less.

When  you think about it, this situation applies to all kinds of salty snacks. Just about every other food product you get in a plastic bag has some kind of zipper, ranging from sliders to press-together styles, so I would like to ask the salty-snack producers, “When are you going to catch up with the times, and put zippers on your bags?”

“Exercise is bunk. If you are healthy, you don’t need it; if you are sick, you shouldn’t take it.”

Actually, Archer Farms, Target's private label brand, puts zippers on many of its salted snacks. On a personal note, the zipper is kind of a pain - it limits my ability to put my big paw in the bag and when you close the zipper you have a bag that is 2-3 times bigger than if you used a chip clip - not to mention the added cost of 5-7 cents for a zipper. I think a simple resealable adhesive strip is a much better and cost effective solution, but that's just one mans opinion.
