Federal auditor calls for massive reform to food safety system
The GAO criticism echoes that of consumer groups, such as the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), who have long called for a unified system of food safety regulation and for more resources to be devoted to the task. Such changes could increase the oversight focused companies, but they could also make it easier to comply by consolidating regulation under one or more agencies. The GAO called on legislators to radically amend the system, which the federal auditor said leaves the U.S. food chain open to attack by terrorists. One solution is to consolidate regulatory insight.

RFID applications developing
With the recent news focus on slower-than-expected adoption in the supply chain, rosy predictions about RFID for pharmaceutical e-Pedigree and speculation on its use for maintenance and repair tracking in aerospace, it's easy to lose sight of the fact that RFID is a bit of a "what if" technology. While it's tempting and economically necessary to focus on the applications that offer large scale implementation, it's equally important to examine all the niche applications, the odd ball ideas, for which RFID can provide the only feasible solution.

Alcan to invest in the Indian flexible packaging market
Alcan will make an initial investment of $10 million in the Indian flexible packaging market. The company will build and equip a new flexible packaging facility in the BHEL Industrial Park in Haridwar, Northern India. The Alcan Packaging facility will supply the rapidly-growing Indian food and personal care markets. "This investment, the first for Alcan Packaging in India, demonstrates the company's continuous commitment to investing and growing in emerging markets by anticipating its customers' expanding needs in the region," said Ilene Gordon, President and Chief Executive Officer of Alcan Packaging.

N.C. company plans to bid on bankrupt Freedom Packaging
Freedom Packaging makes containers from corrugated paperboard that can be assembled into a hexagon shape and which are then lined with a plastic bladder to store liquids. They also produce plastic tank liners which are used inside existing liquid storage containers. The company holds a patent on the containers that will be part of the sale.
