U.K.: Wal-Mart steps up green plans
U.S. retailer Wal-Mart, which owns Asda in the U.K., is set to encourage suppliers, staff and customers to reduce their carbon footprints through a new initiative called Sustainability 360. As a speaker at the Prince of Wales' Business and the Environment Program held in London last night, Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott said the retailer would introduce Global Innovation Projects to challenge staff and suppliers to think about how to remove non-renewable energy from products the company sells.

Wine makers showcase new corks
The world's natural cork merchants and their challengers showed off their products recently in Sacramento, CA, at the Unified Wine and Grape Symposium, a convention that during three days drew about 10,000 people from throughout the wine business. The alternatives to natural cork have grabbed roughly 45 percent of the U.S. closure market, according to Chris Sipola, vice president of Newpak USA, which distributes both natural and newfangled corks. In Australia and New Zealand, the numbers are much higher, with screw-on caps alone commanding 60 percent of the market or more. And the choices are expanding each year: from cork-shaped stoppers made from proprietary blends of rubber, foam and plastic, to metal and plastic screw-tops - not to mention new juice-box-style containers that eliminate the bottle altogether.

Constellation Brands buys Svedka vodka
Constellation Brands Inc., the only beer, wine and spirits company based in the United States, is buying Svedka vodka and its brand owner, Spirits Marque One LLC, for $384 million. The acquisition from Belgian-based Alcofinance SA and Guillaume Cuvelier is expected to close March 1. Svedka, a premium vodka produced in Sweden, was launched in 1998. About 1.1 million cases of Svedka were sold in 2006, mainly in the United States, 60 percent more than in 2005.
