Sustainable Packaging: U.K.'s Asda to remove packaging from fruit and vegetables
Fresh fruit and vegetables are being stripped of their plastic covers as part of a project that could transform the way goods are sold by one of Britain's biggest supermarket groups. In an experiment next week, Asda is to revisit the days of the 1950s greengrocer by removing all packaging from most fresh produce at two stores in northwest England. If buyers are not put off, the policy will be applied to the chain's 316 stores in the UK. The development follows The Independent's campaign against waste, which urges retailers and the public to reduce packaging, which squanders resources and swells landfill sites.

Private-label food and beverage sales set to soar past $56 billion by 2011
Leaving behind the nondescript packaging and "generic" identity of a decade ago, private-label or store-brand food and beverage sales are soaring, according to Private Label Food and Beverages in the U.S., a new report from market research firm Packaged Facts. The report estimates 2006 sales at more than $48 billion, and projects that sales will top $56 billion by 2011.

International Paper completes sale of North American beverage packaging operations
In December 2006, the company agreed to sell its entire beverage packaging business to New Zealand-based Carter Holt Harvey. The North American portion of the sale, which has just been completed, represents the majority of the business. The beverage packaging business also includes wholly owned subsidiaries in China, South Korea and Taiwan, and joint ventures in Latin America, Israel and Saudi Arabia. The sale of these assets to Carter Holt Harvey is expected to close later in the first quarter, at which time International Paper will receive the remainder of the proceeds from the transaction.

Inventor develops drink containers capsule-sealing machine
According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The present invention is a capsule-sealing machine that uses a heat-sealing process to apply sterile aluminum blank capsules on food or drink containers or cans, preferably cylindrical in shape but also square, rectangular or oval. The machine includes a conveyor belt that conveys cans to the machine, a loading carousel, a main carousel, where the blank capsules or can covers are sealed onto the cans, an unloading carousel, and an outfeed conveyor belt. The blank capsules are contained in vertical capsule magazines."
