MOTOR CONTROL Telemecanique brand Altistart 01 mini soft starts from Schneider Electric are engineered for use with a range of fractional and low horsepower single-phase and three-phase asynchronous motors. Designed for specific performance levels, the soft starters are available in three performance levels: ATS01N1 Torque Limiting, ATS01N2 Low Power and ATS01N2 High Power. The ATS01N1 Torque Limiting limits motor torque of fractional motors rated from 3 A to 12 A (1/4 to 3 hp at 230 V) during startup. Company says most types of single-phase motors can be soft started, including split-phase induction, capacitor start, and shaded pole, and it has designed ATS01N1 starts to control single- and three-phase motors rated for 110, 208, 230, 400 and 460 V. The ATS01N2 Low Power starts are designed for use with three-phase motors ranging from 6 to 32 A at 208 to 460 V (2 to 20 hp at 460 V). The low horsepower models are compatible with the Telemecanique brand TeSys U-line motor starter, and the company says the combination offers motor and machine protection, integrated diagnostics capabilities, status reporting, and capability to program using PowerSuite programming software.

INTERFACE PANEL The model G306A from Red Lion Controls features a 5.7-in, 256-color, QVGA 320 x 240 pixel LCD display with three front-panel LED indicators and a five-button keypad for on-screen menus. Company says the G306A's TFT active matrix display gives the interface panel greater contrast, brightness, and overall readability, which can make viewing easier in challenging environments. Operators use the resistive analog touchscreen or front panel keypad to enter data. The G306A is the newest addition to the company's G3 operator interface panels, which come standard with an Ethernet port, USB programming port, support for up to five high-speed serial ports, integrated protocol converter, built-in Web server, standard CompactFlash socket and IT-ready data logging. The G306A model also has increased onboard flash memory of 8 MB, and it can be configured using the company's free Crimson Programming Software. The G306A can be used for collecting and displaying data or interfacing with a range of devices, including PLCs, PCs, drives, and PID controllers.

INTEGRATED DRIVE/CONTROL SYSTEM The Bosch Rexroth IndraDrive Mi combines a drive, motion control, and logic control mounted directly on the motor, where the motor casing serves as the heat sink for the servo/control system. As a result, the system takes up 30 percent less space than other integrated systems where the electronics are fitted behind the motor. The IndraDrive Mi also takes less than half the total build space of traditional servo systems with separate motor and drive packages. Company says the reduction of required space also can reduce the air conditioning requirements of the control cabinet.The IndraDrive Mi is compatible with the other IndraDrive systems. Like other models in the IndraDrive product line, the IndraDrive MI has more than 100 technology functions, including the integrated Motion Logic system conforming to IEC 61131-3 programming languages.

SAFETY AUTOMATION EQUIPMENT The Pilz SafetyEye camera system is designed for three-dimensional safety monitoring. The system has a sensing device, a computer, and a programmable safety and control system. The sensing device has three cameras. The computer receives the camera's image data via fiber-optic cables and creates a three dimensional image using complex algorithms. This image then superimposed over the detection zones image to see any zone violation. The computer gives results to the safety system controller, which is the interface to the machine controller. If a detection zone has been violated, the configurable outputs are shut down. Typically, the sensing device sits above the workstation for an overview of the robot's operating range. When a worker enters the immediate danger zone, there will be an emergency stop to the work. When a worker enters the zone where the robot would take several seconds to reach, the controls reduces the robot speed. When the worker steps back, the robot returns to normal speed.
