One of the core tenets of Burning Man is to Leave No Trace. In 2015, as Nicholas Reichenbach was leaving the annual gathering in Nevada’s Black Rock desert, he was struck by a mountain of discarded plastic water bottles and decided to do something about it. Beginning with a single family-owned artesian spring in Canada, Reichenbach created Flow, a beverage company with a uniquely sustainable commitment to water stewardship and to the use of renewable packaging for its naturally alkaline spring water.

The Toronto-based company markets its plain and organically flavored still spring waters in 500ml and 1L aseptic paperboard cartons from Tetra Pak made of 80% renewable materials and topped with resealable sugarcane-based caps. The TetraPak carton swaps traditional polymers for bio-based polymers and contains post-consumer recycled content. According to the company, the package is also designed to have a carbon footprint that’s seven times lower than glass, four times lower than aluminum, and three times lower than PET.
But for its new premium line of Flow Sparkling Mineral Spring Waters, Flow went in a completely new direction– 300ml aluminum bottles.

Made from 70% recycled aluminum, the bottles use 30% less aluminum than competing formats and require 60% less energy to produce than traditional cans and bottles, thus reducing carbon emissions.
Flow ranks among the highest-scoring B Corporations in the water industry and Reichenbach says the package directly ties into Flow’s overall commitment to operating carbon neutral and reducing emissions across its supply chain. It also supports the company’s ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility while preserving the taste of its water and delivering a premium drinking experience.
The proprietary bottle design was developed in partnership with Kingston Aluminum Technology Inc., which produces the bottles exclusively for Flow.
Flow Sparkling Mineral Spring Water bottles are topped with screw-on aluminum caps and although shrink-wrapped labels were part of the original design concept, Reichenbach says the company is transitioning to direct-to-bottle printing early in 2025. “As part of our sustainability commitment, we continue to explore packaging innovations to reduce plastic use,” he comments.
The introduction of Flow Sparkling Mineral Spring Water marks a significant milestone for Flow’s co-packing business as well. The company will be installing a new production line capable of packing its own aluminum bottles and co-packing for other brands.
Flow Sparkling Mineral Spring Waters are all sugar and calorie-free and come in a range of flavors including unflavored OG, Blackberry + Hibiscus, Lemon + Ginger, and Cucumber + Mint. The new line will launch in January 2025, initially through Flow’s online store and in select major retailers, with broader distribution planned in the months following the launch.
