Sonoco releases 2011-2012 Corporate Responsibility Report
In its 2011-2012 Corporate Responsibility Report, global packaging firm Sonoco outlined its progress and goals in achieving global sustainability targets. Among the initiatives listed is development of a $75 million biomass cogeneration system at its Hartsville, S.C., manufacturing complex, with a boiler system fueled by wood wastes; it will be used in its paper-mill operations and save an estimated $14 million in energy costs, in addition to cutting emissions. The company also expanded recycling in the U.S., reduced carbon emissions 4.4 percent since 2009, cut water usage 5.1 percent in 2011 and started the Sustainability Star Award program to recognize customer- and Sonoco-owned facilities that have hit significant waste-stream reduction milestones.

Sun Chemical low-migration ink line lands InterTech Technology Award
Sun Chemical has received an InterTech Technology Award from the Printing Industries of America for its SunPak LMQ (low migration quality) ink products. The annual award is designed to recognize the development of unique, innovative technologies with the potential to have a significant impact on the graphic arts and related industries. According to the manufacturer, SunPak LMQ products help address the risk brand owners face in packaging, where compounds from materials in the packaging structure can migrate into the food product or the surrounding environment. SunPak LMQ inks reportedly exhibit very low odor, off-flavor and migration levels, and offer a comprehensive solution to brand owners and converters who are looking for ways to address migration concerns for food, pharmaceutical and tobacco applications.

Permira investment group acquires Intelligrated

A holding company owned by private equity outfit Permira has completed its acquisition of automated material handling solutions firm Intelligrated, in a transaction valuated at more than $500 million. Permira's investment reportedly will fund the company's growth plans, including expanding its North American customer base, reaching into emerging markets by partnering with global customers and increasing product offerings.

VA recycling scammers land in prison
The Roanoke (VA) Times reports that one man received prison time, and two others were placed on probation, for running a cardboard recycling scam. The trio of contractors was convicted of diverting cardboard and other recyclable materials from the Kroger warehouse in Salem; prosecutors estimated that they cheated the grocery company out of $1.6 million. Thomas Faulkner, owner of nearby Valley Logistic Services, was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Glenn Wagner, operations manager of Valley Logistics, received three years on probation, and Bernard "Buddy" Smith was sentenced to two years on probation and fined $15,000.
