IPACK-IMA to host PMMI Executive Committee
IPACK-IMA-the international packaging conference and exhibition scheduled Feb. 29-March 3 2012 in Milan, Italy-will be hosting the PMMI Executive Committee. The association leaders' presence at the European show, according to event organizers, will help strengthen the relationship between packaging professionals in both the North American and European markets, and enable PMMI representatives to share valuable industry insight with its membership. According to Charles D. Yuska, PMMI president and CEO, "Bringing PMMI's Executive Committee to IPACK-IMA provides us with the opportunity to educate ourselves in European packaging and processing trends and innovations."

New website touts advantages of glass packaging

Glass packaging specialist Beatson Clark has launched a new website, www.beatsonclark.co.uk, illustrating the advantageous health and environmental properties of the packaging material. The customer section, with 24-hour product information, is updated daily and offers an order and sample request feature. The section also offers a lot of useful account information including key contact details, a project tracker to follow the progress of new projects, stock figures and drawing specifications of all Beatson Clark's glass products. According to Charlotte Taylor, marketing manager for Beatson Clark, "Consumer demand for products packaged in glass is growing. With glass being 100% infinitely recyclable and totally inert, it is a healthy and sustainable product that helps to minimise the effect of packaging on the environment. We wanted our new website to illustrate these advantages so consumers and brand owners are more aware of just how remarkable glass is as a packaging form."

 

Versatile Packagers adds clean-room packaging capability

Contract packaging company Versatile Packagers, has added a clean room to their 150,000 square foot facility in Tampa, FL. The expansion is designed to meet the needs of customers requiring a high level of product safety and quality. The room offers contamination control and protection against external influences in the packaging process. According to the company, the clean room, along with the company's food permit from the department of agriculture, enables Versatile Packagers to process dry foods in the new space. The company also plans to use the space for nutraceutical packaging, and it can provide blister packaging, shrink wrapping, fin sealing, and poly bagging.

 

Ardagh first packaging firm to land Cradle to Cradle certification

UK-based Ardagh Group has become the first packaging company to gain Cradle to Cradle certification for its baby food and paint can. The company's certification process began with a period of nine months of collecting data of all the components of the two cans; the data was independently analysed at the deepest chemical level (up to 100ppm) and covers a comprehensive assessment of the material input, material reutilization, energy consumption, water impacts and social responsibility. The Cradle to Cradle certification is managed through the Environmental Protection and Encouragement Agency.

 

Amcor E-Close receives Scanstar packaging award

Amcor Flexibles' E-Close has received an award from Scanstar, an annual competition organized by the Scandinavian Packaging Association. The packaging is designed to give packaging professionals innovative opening and re-seal features, making it suitable for packaging in the cheese market.

 

 

FDA to hold meeting on cosmetic microbiological safety
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutritionis hosting a public meeting on microbiological safety issues relevant to cosmetic products in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 30, 2011. The goal of the meeting is to give packaging professionals and other stakeholders an opportunity to present information to the agency regarding a variety of issues, including product and packaging characteristics that affect microbial growth and risk of infection; microbiological testing of cosmetics; types of preservative systems and how to test their effectiveness; and areas where FDA guidance may be useful. Eriez releases metal-detector selection guide

To help professionals in packaging and other industries properly select an industrial metal detector for their particular application and its associated challenges, Eriez is offering a free guide called, "How to Choose and Use Industrial Metal Detectors." The resources explains the principles of metal detectors, where they should be used, the basic layout of a metal detector, styles and how to select the right metal detector. The guide, available on the Eriez website, concludes with tips on getting the most production out of an installed metal detector.

 

Pharma testing equipment firm reports record sales

Packaging machinery manufacturer Sepha Ltd. reports that sales of its range of non-destructive leak testing equipment for the pharmaceutical packaging industry has reached record levels. With demand up across all major markets, the company says the increase will fund future research and development, and enable it to bring forward future innovations aimed at reducing costs and driving quality for pharmaceutical manufacturers and contract packers.

 

Kluttz promoted to vp of operations for Harper Corp. of America

Anilox roll supplier Harper Corp. has promoted Ronald (Lee) Harper Kluttz to vp of operations. The grandson of company founders Ron and Katherine Harper, Kluttz is the son of current Harper President Margie Kluttz. He has worked for the firm for 20 years, starting in 1991 in the Cleaner Hands division. He has since been a part of several other departments and held a variety of positions, including blast operator, member of Harper GraphicSolutions, plant supervisor, customer service manager, plant manager, and Vice President of Manufacturing Operations. In his new position, Kluttz will be responsible for the daily operations of Harper Corporation in both Green Bay, WI, and Charlotte, NC.

 

Group calls for ban on plastic bottles in the Grand Canyon.
Change.org is calling for the National Park Service to reconsider a ban on plastic bottles in the Grand Canyon. According to the group, park officials abruptly canceled a proposed ban-aimed to cut down on the amount of litter in the Grand Canyon-after intervention by Coca-Cola, a major national park donor. Susan Stribling, director of communications for Coca-Cola North America, expressed doubts that an outright ban of plastic bottles would be effective; instead, she said, the company supported increased recycling education as a way to reduce the amount of waste at the park.
