Working with the National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR), SPI: The Plastics Industry Trade Assn. is seeking proposals from United States recycling program operators interested in establishing a model program for collection and intermediate processing of PET thermoformed packaging, and will award up to $100,000 in grant funds to the program(s) selected.

The grant is open to any United States recycling program operators that provide or contract for the full scope of program services, from consumer education through to the marketing of material, and that can affect the implementation of their program across all of these areas.

In the United States, thermoformers play an important role in displaying and selling food and consumer products," said Daniel Mohs, CEO of Placon and chair of the SPI Thermoformers Committee. "We have been using post-consumer materials for more than two decades, and now we move forward on the final key element of sustainability-recycling thermoforms and keeping them out of landfills. With this project, we will close the loop and reuse a valuable resource."
