Here’s a Surprise About Ecommerce Packaging

Created by Packaging Digest in Canva Ecommerce-packaging-consumer-preference-ftd.jpg
Online shoppers overwhelmingly have a packaging preference, and it is contrary to the direction Amazon has taken.

Amazon recently invested heavily in artificial intelligence to help order fulfillment packers decide which shipping package to use — an envelope or a box — for a particular customer’s purchase. Replacing a bulky box with an envelope when possible has helped the mega-etailer reduce the weight of its outbound packages by one-third since 2015, saving 915,000 tons of packaging material worldwide or the equivalent of more than 1.6 billion shipping boxes.

But it turns out that a high percentage of ecommerce shoppers are quite happy with the box, and for some pretty good reasons, as this infographic shows.

The data comes from the Dotcom Distribution 7th annual ecommerce consumer study. Results of the full study are available here in a free, 67-page PDF: https://bit.ly/dotcom2021.
