ProAmpac Launches Recyclable Pouch for Pet and Human Food

Side-gusseted, flat-bottom pouch made from high-performance mono-polyethylene is a recyclable replacement for conventional pouches.

Flexible packaging supplier ProAmpac has launched a recyclable polyethylene (PE) flat-bottom pouch suitable for food packaging. The monomaterial PE pouch offers a more sustainable option than pouches made from conventional, nonrecyclable flexible material.

The new side-gusseted, quad-seal pouches are made from ProAmpac’s R-2000 ProActive Recyclable structure, a recyclable laminated mono-polyethylene product. ProAmpac launched ProActive Recyclable R-2000 for dry products in August 2021.

“ProAmpac’s QuadFlex Recyclable product has been prequalified for store drop-off by How2Recycle,” Ben Davis, ProAmpac product manager, pouches and bags, tells PlasticsToday. “However, a brand must submit its final package, including artwork, to How2Recyle for its final approval before a proper store drop-off label can be used.”

The recyclable pouch, available with a flat or a pinched bottom, was designed as a drop-in replacement for pouches made from conventional multimaterial laminates. The package fills and seals like pouches made from conventional laminates, exhibiting what ProAmpac characterizes as “excellent” heat resistance and seal appearance. It also runs at rate on existing filling lines.

In addition, the pouch looks good on-shelf, with a five-panel billboard for branding. It can be decorated with high-definition flexographic printing and optional gloss and matte finishes. Brand owners can specify transparent windows in the main panels or side gussets to display their products.

Easy-open and -reclose options for the pouch, including hook-to-hook and press-to-close zippers, offer convenience at the point of use. Additionally, the R-2000 structure provides controlled tearing for easy opening. The package was designed to survive very high drops and resist dimpling, as well.

The pouch is available with standard, high, or ultra-high moisture and/or oxygen barrier, accommodating applications such as pet food and treats, human food, and home-care products.

“We're in the late stages of scaling up for both human and pet food brands,” Davis discloses. "Although we cannot disclose the brand owners, we anticipate the packaging to hit store shelves in the fourth quarter this year. We are excited to be launching parallel projects for pet food and human food, but we expect the bulk of our QuadFlex Recyclable customers to be pet food brands.”
