Florida Crystals is the first US grower of Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC) sugarcane and is touting this status with new packaging graphics, an ROC insignia, and educational messaging (including the below video.)

The new certification emblem signifies a commitment to quality and “minimally processed homegrown products” and is awarded to those who meet the highest standards in both organic and regenerative agriculture, the company said in a statement, adding: “It indicates that Florida Crystals’ farmers prioritize soil health, animal welfare, and social fairness–all key principles of regenerative farming.”

Packaging redesign and rebranding.

The new emblem is part of a redesign that included rebranding products with new names and new on-pack graphics. The company’s Turbinado Cane Sugar was previously Demerara Cane Sugar and its Golden Granulated Organic RCS is now known as Regenerative Organic Raw Cane Sugar.

Each product package sports bolder, brighter graphics. Both sugars are packaged in eco-conscious, multi-wall paper bags that are comprised of multiple layers of paper-based materials.

ROC status represents a dedication to “going beyond sustainable farming practices,” Diego Luzuriaga, vice president of research and development at Florida Crystals said in a news release. He added that the company’s focus is to enhance soil health, increase carbon drawdown, “and build a balanced ecosystem as a whole.”

The new ROC emblem, packaging graphics, and enhanced compost production represent significant milestones for Florida Crystals, which is currently the only producer of USDA-certified organic raw cane sugars made from organic sugarcane that’s grown and harvested in the U.S.

Florida Crystals Compost

The company reached an agricultural milestone in September.

In September the company also marked another environmentally-forward, first-time milestone achievement at its compost facility: producing more than 100,000 tons of organic compost in one season.

The facility, which is integrated into Florida Crystals’ sugar milling complex in Pahokee, FL, plays a crucial role in achieving all of the company’s five Pillars of Regenerative Agriculture: improve soil health, upcycle byproducts, increase biodiversity, reduce synthetic materials and conserve water. It currently ranks as one of the top 10 largest US compost facilities.

The facility features a closed-loop commitment to upcycling that ensures that 100% of its organic farm is nourished by in-house compost made from upcycled byproducts. These include sugarcane leaves, soil recovered in the milling process, and sugarcane fiber ash from the boilers. In short, what comes from the farms is returned to the farms for the next crop.
