It’s estimated that 1.44 billion tons of food is wasted globally each year, which is one-third of all food produced for human consumption, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

That figure includes the US, which has one of the most rigorous food supply chains in the world. Worse, the most waste is found at the end of the supply chain after all the value-processing, packaging, and distribution — has been added.

The good news? The problem can be addressed through packaging, and we have an expert to discuss the topic including the latest waste-reducing packaging technologies. Claire Sand, PhD, was recipient of the Institute of Food Technologists’ 2020 Riester-David-Brody award for lifetime achievement in food packaging, and is owner of Packaging Technology and Research and Gazelle Mobile Packaging. She’s also Adjunct Professor, CalPoly, Michigan State University, and the University of Minnesota.
