It’s estimated that 1.44 billion tons of food is wasted globally each year, which is one-third of all food produced for human consumption, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.
That figure includes the US, which has one of the most rigorous food supply chains in the world. Worse, the most waste is found at the end of the supply chain after all the value-processing, packaging, and distribution — has been added.
