Oreo’s New Star Wars Cookie Packs Pack a Secret

Will your special-edition cookie packaging contain characters for the light side or the dark side of the Force?

Mondelez Intl. joined forces with Lucasfilm in a collaboration that brings Star Wars Oreo Cookie packs to our part of the galaxy.

The brand and the packaging draws on the Star Wars mystique on several levels.

First, it invites fans to discover their own destiny akin to the choice Luke Skywalker made in a pivotal scene of the original Star Wars movie series. Consumers will determine whether their future is with the light side or dark side. Unlike Luke, consumers’ fate is decided by the cookie pack they purchase. That’s because there are two versions of the Star Wars Oreo Cookie Packs, both wrapped in identical packaging.

Each of the two packs contain a different color creme that symbolizes either the dark side or light side of the Force. The cookies carry different character embossments of corresponding dark side and light side characters and include red or blue creme, respectively. The creme is infused with “kyber” aka sugar crystals, inspired by the crystals found in a Lightsaber.


The dark side cookies feature embossed Darth Vader, Darth Maul, and other familiar evildoers. The light side cookies feature embossed Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Yoda, and other beloved characters. There are 20 characters in total, 10 each of dark and light.

There’s also a packaging design bow to Star Wars lore that goes deeper than a first glance — you must concentrate more closely on the artwork. That's because the packs feature beautiful character artwork hand-painted by the legendary illustrator Greg Hildebrandt, an iconic Star Wars poster artist since 1977.

The limited-edition cookies will be available for presale starting May 30 at OREO.com/StarWars before rolling out at nationwide retailers starting June 10. They will be available only while supplies last.

The last time we recall Oreos tapping pop culture like this was for special-edition Game of Thrones cookie packaging in 2019.
