Squid Ink to sell primarily through distribution
Historically known as a high quality ink and ink jet printer manufacturing company, Squid Ink has made a fundamental change in its business strategy to enhance growth and heighten brand awareness. Effective May 1, 2009, Squid Ink will use distributors as its primary sales channel. Squid Ink Manufacturing, Inc. will continue to service its long established customer base directly, but moving forward will work with current and new distributors to sell its high quality ink jet products under the Squid Ink brand name. The use of distribution will localize service and support of Squid Ink products and allow the company to focus on developing new products to meet the changing needs of the customers. Squid Ink specializes in the manufacture of superior quality inks and ink jet printing equipment for the packaging and product marking industry. Plastipak Packaging, Inc. is pleased to announce that it has entered into a perpetual and exclusive worldwide hot-fill technology license with Tecsor HR, a French corporation. Plastipak has the right to sublicense the technology, and also has an option to take an equity stake in Tecsor HR. The technology includes patented bottle lightweighting and reshaping processes. The technology offers significant material savings, the ability to use high-speed blowmolding/filling lines, and the potential of bottle design flexibility and differentiation. The global hot-fill market includes sports drinks, juice and juice drinks, food, and nutritional supplements. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. A.R. Arena Products, Inc., which launched the first reusable plastic container (RPC) pooling business in North America, is expanding services offered on its state-of-the-art, reusable bag-in-box IBC, it was announced today. Alcan Packaging promotes Kitchel to vice president
Frank Kitchel has been named vice president of marketing, Meat & Dairy Flexibles for Alcan Packaging Food Americas. He advances from the position of director of marketing, Meat & Dairy Flexibles. In addition to expanded marketing responsibilities, Kitchel will create, implement and lead a new applications development services (ADS) group. The ADS group will work with customers and the company's research and development department on innovative packaging solutions. Kitchel will continue to lead the development and implementation of market strategies for the Meat & Dairy Flexibles marketing team. Kitchel joined Alcan Packaging's Meat & Dairy business in 2001. He started his career at Quantum Chemical Corporation as a research engineer, then served as marketing director at Eval Company of America prior to joining Alcan Packaging. Kitchel holds a Master of Business Administration degree in industrial marketing from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.
Nordson CorporationChairman, CEO and President Edward P. Campbell Announces Intention to Retire in Early 2010
The Nordson Corporation Board of Directors today reported that Chairman, CEO and President Edward P. Campbell, 59, has announced his intention to retire in early 2010. The Board confirmed that Campbell will remain in his current role until a successor is named and in place, a process that will include internal and external candidates and is expected to take until the end of calendar year 2009. Campbell has also stated his intention to retire from the Nordson Board when the CEO transition is complete. Campbell joined Nordson in 1988 as a corporate vice president. He was named chief operating officer in 1994. In November of 1997, Campbell was elected president and chief executive officer. Exopack, an established leader in the development and manufacture of a variety of paper and plastic flexible packaging solutions, signed a joint venture agreement this week with Lebanon-based packaging manufacturer INDEVCO Group (INDEVCO) to manufacture co-extruded polyethylene film in the Middle East. Initially, this joint venture will include the installation of film production equipment in INDEVCO’s Masterpak sal flexible packaging facility in Zouk Mosbeh, Lebanon. This new extrusion capacity will be used for the manufacture of various coextruded film products for uses in flexible packaging. The film will be distributed by Exopack as part of the company’s family of film products. Exopack and INDEVCO have shared a long-term relationship through Exopack’s Global Packaging Linx (GPL) group. These two companies share common competencies in film production and flexible packaging manufacture to support customers from a global sourcing and innovation perspective. This joint venture represents the strengthening of this relationship and brings the first cost-effective films from the Middle East to customers in North America. CardPak Inc. is joining with the Solon schools and the National Paperboard Packaging Council in sponsoring the Trees Into Cartons, Cartons Into Trees Program. TICCIT (pronounced "ticket") is an outreach and education program highlighting the natural renewability and sustainability of paperboard packaging. And at the center of TICCIT is a mainstay of the typical school day: the milk carton. As part of TICCIT, milk cartons are collected out of schools' waste streams and re-used for planting new trees. Seeds and saplings are planted in the cartons, and then the new "carton-and-tree units" are planted in the ground. The cartons provide protection and a natural "water funnel" for the new trees. As the trees grow, the cartons break down, completing the trees into cartons, cartons into trees cycle.

TAPPI calls for PLACE entries
TAPPI is now accepting abstracts for the 2010 PLACE event to be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, April 18-21, 2010. Extended abstracts will be accepted anytime before August 10, 2009. Conference subject matter will include: Advances in materials and equipment; Product design innovations; and New applications and how these relate to product end-use. Nordson Corporation today announced that Randolph (Randy) W. Carson has been elected as a member of the company’s board of directors. Carson has more than 35 years of leadership experience working for diversified global industrial companies, most recently as chief executive officer of Eaton Corporation’s $8 billion electrical business unit. Carson’s appointment brings the total number of Nordson Directors to 12. Carson, 59, holds a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Valparaiso University. Prior to Eaton, he progressed through a series of executive management positions with Rockwell International. Earlier this year Carson announced his retirement from Eaton effective May 1, 2009. He also serves on the board of directors for Fairchild Semiconductor International.
GPICalls for Entries for University Student Recycle Glass YouTube Competition
The Glass Packaging Institute (GPI) is sponsoring its second annual YouTube video competition as part of Recycle Glass Week, September 21 – 27, 2009. Students are asked to create a 30-second YouTube video about the benefits of glass container recycling for a chance to win $2,000, $1,000, or $500 (for first, second, or third place, respectively). All full-time students (applies to students who are currently enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students in U.S. universities and have completed 12 credit hours or more of courses) are eligible to submit videos for the competition. Videos will be judged on originality and creativity, communicating the ‘glass message,’ and production technique and value. Videos must be submitted by 12:00 p.m. EDT on Friday, August 21, 2009. Crown launches online metal packaging innovation channel
Do you have a breakthrough idea about how metal packaging can enhance consumer convenience, improve functionality or simply create a visually alluring experience? Now there's a place to share it. CROWN Packaging Technology, Inc., the innovation subsidiary of Crown Holdings, Inc. has launched an Open Innovation section on its website. This new feature allows anybody to submit unique ideas, including new concepts for technologies or processes, for consideration by the company's Innovation Team. Visitors will be asked to read and acknowledge the submission terms, complete a Submission Form and upload supporting information. Owens-Illinois Appoints Jay L. Geldmacher to Board of Directors
Owens-Illinois, Inc., announced that Jay L. Geldmacher has been appointed to serve on the company's board of directors effective immediately. He also will serve as a member of the audit committee. Mr. Geldmacher is executive vice president of Emerson Electric Company, and serves as president of Emerson Network Power's Embedded Computing and Power Group. Prior to joining Emerson in 1996, he was executive vice president of Knowles Electronics. Mr. Geldmacher brings extensive operations, sales and marketing experience, particularly in the Asian region, to the O-I board. Mr. Geldmacher currently serves on the advisory boards for the graduate and undergraduate programs of the University of Arizona's Eller College of Management. He holds a bachelor's degree in marketing from the University of Arizona and an MBA from the University of Chicago.
NewPage to sell Kimberly, WI facility
Coated paper manufacturer NewPage announced that it has engaged an investment banking firm, Sanabe & Associates, LLC, to support NewPage with the marketing and sales process for the Kimberly, WI facility. Headquartered in Miamisburg, Ohio, NewPage Corporation is the largest coated paper manufacturer in North America, based on production capacity, with $4.4 billion in net sales for the year ended December 31, 2008. The company’s product portfolio is the broadest in North America and includes coated freesheet, coated groundwood, supercalendered, newsprint and specialty papers. Sanabe & Associates will focus its efforts on finding potential buyers who are interested in manufacturing non-coated products that do not directly compete with the current portfolio of printing papers offered by NewPage, as well as potential other uses for all or portions of the site.
