Unboxing the Impact: The True Cost of Influencer Packaging
The dramatic presentation of influencer packaging fosters a culture of hoarding and overconsumption, contributing to environmental degradation.
Recently, I’ve noticed an increase in the number of unboxing videos from various influencers on Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok.
When it comes to the packaging of the brands they’re receiving merch from, it’s clear that it stands out from the standard packaging we normal people receive — it’s often wasteful, non-recyclable, and extravagant, adorned with ribbons, glitter, plastic materials, and unique shapes.
This dramatic presentation not only fosters a culture of hoarding and over-consumption but also contributes significantly to environmental degradation.
While the unboxing videos offer viewers a vicarious thrill and a sense of community, along with education that sparks material desires, influencer packaging creates a tremendous amount of waste.
This wastefulness, driven by capitalism, doesn’t reflect well on brands. So, how can we support brands that support sustainability? As one expert states “Choose to support influencers who promote sustainability,” and remember, “The best thing we can unbox is a better future.”
