EXPO PACK México -- Strong Growth Predicted in Processed Food Sales

Figures for 2008 processed food sales in Mexico should total between 4 and 5 percent higher than 2007, according to predictions from the Mexican Chamber of Processed Foods, CANAINCA. CANAINCA expects similar growth in 2009.

“Regardless of the downward trend from 2007 to 2008 in Latin American gross domestic product (GDP), consumer spending on food and beverages rose and remains strong,” said CANAINCA Director Armando Cobos.

Every year at PROCESA, co-located with EXPO PACK México, manufacturers from more than 20 countries show the latest technology in food and beverage processing machinery and equipment to end users from Mexico and Latin America. The 2008 edition featured over 400 companies exhibiting state-of-the-art equipment for the industrial baking and confectionery, fruit and vegetables, beverage, dairy, meat, poultry, seafood, frozen and preserved foods industries.

“The combined events are recognized internationally as the most comprehensive packaging and processing machinery and materials trade show in Latin America bringing together more than 32,000 qualified attendees and exhibitors annually,” commented Jose Martinez, Director of the PMMI Latin America Office; PMMI produces EXPO PACK México.

The food industry is the largest packaging machinery buyer in the country, accounting for 40 percent of purchases; the beverage industry is second, accounting for 12 percent.

According to statistics from Mexico’s Ministry of Economy, the food and beverage industries represented by CANAINCA account for 23 percent of Mexico’s manufacturing GDP, and more than 30,000 companies manufacture food products in Mexico. Mexico’s food industry is a mix of large international food manufacturers, large Mexican food companies and small- and medium-sized companies that produce niche and regional products.

“Mexican companies are continuing to invest in processing and packaging machinery to meet increasing consumer demand,” added Martinez. “These companies attend EXPO PACK México and PROCESA knowing they will find complete solutions to increase their production capacity and improve efficiencies to better serve the market place. This year, as part of the EXPO PACK México and PROCESA promotional tour, we will visit six food producing states as well as Sinaloa and Merida, both states represent new growing markets.”

EXPO PACK México and PROCESA are supported by leading trade associations and institutions, including PMMI, which also produces PACK EXPO International and PACK EXPO Las Vegas, the Mexican Packaging Association (AMEE), the Mexican Chamber of Processed Food (CANAINCA), the Food Processing Suppliers Association (FPSA), and the Mexican Association of Purified Water Manufacturers and Distributors (ANPDAPAC).

EXPO PACK México and PROCESA 2009, the leading packaging and food processing business forum for the Mexican and Latin American markets, will take place June 23-26, at Centro Banamex in Mexico City.
