Paper Packaging Canada announces its first Board of Directors. Colin Fernie of Smurfit-MBI has been elected Chairman. Other executive members of the board include Bob Hagan of Atlantic Packaging (Vice-Chairman); Francois Guite of Norampac, representing Canada's packaging mills (2nd Vice-Chairman); and Charles Malo of Norampac (Secretary/Treasurer).

John Mullinder, President and Chief Executive Officer of Paper Packaging Canada, welcomed the election of officers. "I am delighted by the quality and standing of the executives of our first board. This leadership, knowledge, experience and drive will be invaluable for the paper packaging industry in what are extremely challenging times."

Other directors elected include: Chris Bartlett (TenCorr Packaging); Jim Levia (Emballages Mitchel-Lincoln); Gary Johnson (Maritime Paper Products Ltd.); James Devries (Crown Packaging); Larry Cooper (Independent Corrugator); Marc Rolland (MontCorr Packaging); Michel Dubuc (Kruger); Keith Munt (Propak Limited); Peter Moore (Moore Packaging) and Curtis MacMillan (Master Packaging). The Paper and Paperboard Packaging Environmental Council (PPEC) is represented by its chairman, Charles Parlagreco (Astro Box).

Elected chairman, Colin Fernie, said he looked forward to advancing the interests of the industry in Canada. Mr. Fernie is Vice-President and General Manager of Smurfit-MBI, one of Canada's major producers of paper-based packaging. He has been a strong advocate of rationalizing the industry's representation by associations, which led to the merger of two existing associations and the closer linking with the industry's environmental arm (PPEC) to form the new Paper Packaging Canada.

According to the company, the board's mandate is to advance the competitiveness of the industry by embracing sustainability in all its forms (environmental, economic, and social); by protecting the health and safety of its stakeholders; and communicating this to its customers, governments and the public at large.

Paper Packaging Canada represents the major packaging mill companies in Canada and the major converters of that paper and board into packaging grade products.
