Facing an average of 20+ packs/hr rejected because of package defects or weight inaccuracies with a thermoformer, Helmond, Holland-based Giebels Meat Products, known for its top-quality meat-based meals, decided to take action as it prepared to add a ready-meal to its retail mix.

In a plant that already produces up to 3,400 kg of product/hr, Giebels has installed a SmartPacker SX400 from CFS (www.CFS.com) , a vertical packaging machine capable of forming Quatro-seal standup packages. Said to be ideal for preserving frozen and fresh products, the packages are reported to be very popular with consumers while contributing strongly to product presentation.

Working off of a multihead weigher, the flowpacker is said to reduce not only the labor requirements needed to rectify the thermoformer's errors, but also, according to Giebels director Mart Kobussen, its flexible operation means that Giebels can also use it for its existing product range.

He adds, “We are now confident that we can complete our demanding production schedule on time, every time. And, of course, we have been able to reduce waste. It's also easy to operate, maintain and clean.”
