Every year, the World Packaging Organisation’s WorldStar Awards competition recognizes the best of the best in packaging innovations from around the globe. From the more than 300 entries representing more than 34 countries, a panel of judges selects approximately 200 winners representing every facet of the packaging community, including manufacturers, converters, suppliers, processors, designers, marketers, and end users.

The key distinction of this packaging competition is that entries must already be winners of qualifying national or regional competitions that have been operational for at least three years. According to Soha Atallah, WPO vice president of marketing, this process "adds a layer of rigor to the selection process, making the achievement even more meaningful.”

This year’s WorldStar award winners for the medical and pharmaceutical category show a strong commitment to sustainability. Novel designs that reduce materials and parts without sacrificing protection are especially on-trend — as is the use of paper to replace plastic, in cases making the package 100% curbside recyclable. Judges also recognized packages designed to improve efficiency in the manufacturing and packaging process.

Promoting a positive user experience was another common theme. Many of the winning entries were designed with ease of use and accessibility top of mind — especially for people with limited mobility.
