Sonoco Names Sanders Executive Vice President of Global Consumer Businesses
Colyer Named Vice President, Global Industrial Converting
Sonoco announced that M. Jack Sanders has been named executive vice president, Consumer, effective January 1, 2010, according to Harris E. DeLoach, Jr., chairman, president and chief executive officer. Sanders, 56, will succeed Charles Sullivan, 66, who is retiring effective March 31, 2010.

 

Effective with this change, DeLoach also announced that all of the Company's global industrial businesses will report directly to him. In addition, John Colyer has been named vice president, Global Industrial Converting, reporting to DeLoach. In this new position, Colyer, 48, will have responsibility for the Company's global tubes and cores, protective packaging, wire and cable reels and paperboard specialties.


Uwe Keiter joins OMAC executive committee
With the selection of Uwe Keiter, B&R Global Account Management, at PACK EXPO in Las Vegas, the OMAC (Organization for Machine Automation and Control) recognizes the efforts of the automation specialist in the packaging industry. Keiter will follow in the footsteps of Markus Sandhöfner from Strategic Business Development, and take over as the representative for technology suppliers in the executive committee of the OMAC Packaging Workgroup (OPW).

 

Founded in 1994, today the OMAC Packaging Workgroup provides a platform exchange between technology suppliers in the packaging industry. Around 500 members make the OMAC give the organization world-wide recognition in the area of machine automation and manufacturing.

A. Schulman to acquire ICO, Inc.
A. Schulman, Inc. announced today that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire all of the outstanding stock of ICO, Inc. pending approval of the transaction by ICO shareholders and receipt of customary regulatory approvals. Under the terms of the agreement, the total consideration comprises $105.0 million in cash and 5.1 million shares of A. Schulman common stock.

 

 

CMM trade show acquired by Mack Brooks Exhibitions
The converting show CMM has been acquired by Mack Brooks Exhibitions Ltd, UK, and is being replaced by ICE USA, which now becomes the fourth in a global series of International Converting Exhibitions, known as ICE shows. The others are ICE Europe (Munich, Germany), ICE Asia (Shanghai, China) and ICE South America (São Paulo, Brazil). ICE USA will take place from 6-8 April 2011 in Orlando, Florida, at the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC), the region's main exhibition facility. For further details visit www.ice-x.com


RockTenn Announces Price Increase on Containerboard
RockTenn announces today a $50 per ton price increase on all grades of containerboard. Price increases are effective with January, 2010 shipments.

 

Unisource expands European presence with purchase of Euro-Papier
Unisource Worldwide, Inc., one of the leading distributors of paper, packaging and facility supplies in North America, has announced that Graph Comm International, a subsidiary of Graphic Communications Holdings, Inc., has completed the acquisition of Euro-Papier.


MSU Packaging Executives Forum
Michigan State University is conducting its Packaging Executives Forum on Tuesday, January 26, 2010. Participants can meet Dr. Joe Hotchkiss, the Center for Packaging Innovation and Sustainability's new director, learn about sustainability research across MSU, and participate in an afternoon "roll-up your sleeves" work session to help vet out corporate needs related to how best the center can focus its research, outreach and education goals to serve industry. Dr. Jennifer McEntire of the Institute of Food Technologists to speak at the 2010 Traceability Interoperability Summit
Dr. Jennifer Cleveland McEntire, manager of science and technology projects at the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), will be a featured speaker at the 2010 Traceability Interoperability Summit. Trained as a food microbiologist, Dr. McEntire is responsible for all of IFT's technical grant and contract work and leads initiatives in the areas of food safety and defense. She received her Bachelor's degree in Agriculture from the University of Delaware and conducted her doctoral work in the Department of Food Science at Rutgers University as a USDA National Needs Fellow in Food Safety.

Sonoco acquires EconoReel plastic spools and reels assets
Sonoco has completed the acquisition of the injection molded plastics spools and reels assets of EconoReel Corporation of Logan, Utah. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. EconoReel designs, manufactures and distributes small to mid-sized diameter plastic and composite spools and reels primarily for the insulated wire market. The acquisition includes a molded plastics spools and reels manufacturing facility in Logan, Utah, and additional manufacturing assets in Mississippi of Southern Reel, a controlled subsidiary of EconoReel.


Nordson Corporation promotes Jeff Pembroke to President of Nordson EFD 

Jeff Pembroke has been promoted to president of Nordson EFD. Pembroke succeeds Peter Lambert, who had served as president of Nordson EFD since 2005 and was recently elected senior vice president with global responsibility for Nordson's Adhesive Dispensing Systems segment.

WorldStar winners selected in Sri Lanka
WorldStar 2009 attracted 237 entries from 35 countries around the world. Out of these, 129 were selected as WorldStar winners 2009 by the jury in their meeting in Mount Lavinia, a district of Colombo, Sri Lanka, on November 17, 2009. Five winners were also nominated for the “best-of-the best” President’s Award. The jury consisted of 14 country representatives from the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) and one representative from the International Packaging Press Organisation (IPPO).

Kate Putnam is a Top Woman Entrepreneur 2009
Package Machinery co Inc is very pleased to share that its President Katherine Putnam has been chosen as a Top Woman Entrepreneur 2009 by Work Life Matters magazine. Optima Group Pharma holds “Marathon of events”
Schwäbisch Hall / Mornshausen. The first highlight was an open door day (‘Open House’) for employees, then the open door days for clients, followed by a training course on ‘pharmaceutical lyophilization’. From the end of October until the beginning of November, the Mornshausen facility of Optima Group Pharma, where Klee manufactures its freeze driers, is said to have been a “beehive” of activity.

Heritage Packaging Expands Production with Latest Technology
With the addition of two, state-of-the-art bag and pouch manufacturing machines, Heritage Packaging is equipped to meet the needs of even more local, national and worldwide customers. The new machines, the Ro-An-24 and Prototech-36, give Heritage Packaging the ability to quickly produce both large and small-runs of bags or pouches for a diverse array of industrial, commercial and military applications. Their capabilities include three-sided, shaped seal, re-closable zipper and spout attachment pouches; pet food, chemical and high barrier packaging pouches; and specially equipped pouches designed for medical applications. This upgrade has also increased Heritage Packaging’s ability to maintain tight tolerances, while at the same time increasing production rates to an average of more than 100 pouches per minute.

B&R and Wonderware expand cooperation
With its participation in the "Powered by Wonderware" program, B&R has expanded its options in the field of visualization software. The automation supplier will now be offering Windows CE based HMI devices, such as the powerful Power Panel PP320 and the two Panel PCs PPC300 and PPC700, with the preinstalled InTouch® Compact Edition Software from Wonderware. For the end users, this means Power Panel and Panel PC devices are delivered ready for operation.

Design agency facilitates donation valued at $400,000 to hospital in Africa
International design agency, NiCE LTD has coordinated a $20,000 donation to Doc to Dock a non-profit that works hand in hand with the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) and Project C.U.R.E. to help meet the needs of medical centers in developing countries. The donation will be used to bring $400,000 worth of supplies and equipment to a needy medical center in Senegal. NiCE LTD’s Davide Nicosia wrote the $20,000 check on behalf of NiCE LTD’s clients -- including Procter & Gamble and Kraft Foods -- both of which have partnered with CGI on a number of projects.

ABB realigns automation divisions to enhance growth opportunities
ABB is reorganizing its automation divisions to align their activities more closely with those of its customers. These changes will enable ABB to better tap growth opportunities in service, expand its presence in the discrete manufacturing sector and better respond to the increasing demand for energy efficient solutions. Effective Jan. 1, 2010, the business units currently in the Automation Products and Robotics divisions will be regrouped into two new divisions – Discrete Automation and Motion, and Low Voltage Products. The Process Automation division will remain unchanged except for the addition of the instrumentation business from the Automation Products division.

Sonoco to offer corrugating medium
Sonoco will begin offering semi-chemical corrugating medium to the marketplace from its Hartsville, S.C., mill beginning January 1, 2010. Sonoco has been manufacturing high-quality, low-cost medium paperboard through its #10 machine in Hartsville since 1957.

 

RockTenn announces price increase on coated recycled paperboard
RockTenn announces today a $40 per ton price increase on all grades of coated recycled paperboard. Price increases are effective with shipments on January 4, 2010.

 

Adobe issues call for entries to 2010 Adobe Design Achievement Awards
Adobe Systems Incorporated announced the call for entries for the tenth annual Adobe® Design Achievement Awards (ADAA). This premier competition honors the best student graphic designers, photographers, illustrators, animators, digital filmmakers, developers and computer artists from accredited higher education institutions worldwide.

For the second consecutive year, Icograda (International Council of Graphic Design Associations) is endorsing and supporting these prestigious student awards. Adobe will host the awards ceremony during the Adobe MAX conference being held in Los Angeles in late October 2010.
