Checkweigher helps food producer achieve high-accuracy in filling

Product safety is the focal point of our work", explains Herbert Knapmeyer, head of electrical engineering and automation in the Walter Rau production facilities. "To us, the consistent development of our quality management system has always been a matter of course.”

Since its first audit to the International Food Standard (IFS) in February 2004 by the Fresenius Institute, the Walter Rau production plant in Hilter, Germany, has achieved and maintained the highest IFS level.

The company’s quality control process for the company’s margarine, fat and oil products includes the use of technical solutions from Garvens and Safeline, both members of the Mettler Toledo PI Division.

Walter Rau’s margarine product Deli Reform is filled on a four-lane production line, and one of these lanes pass a type S3 checkweigher from Mettler-Toledo Garvens. This checkweigher uses the continuously captured weight data to automatically adjust its feedback control, correcting filling behavior of upstream fillers and optimizing Deli reform margarine portions.

To provide reporting of checkweighing data, all the Garvens checkweighers in the Walter Rau plant are connected to This statistical quality control system provides a multitude of reports for evaluating the production data. These details can serve as a precise proof of course of production for both checkweighers and compatible metal detectors.
