PackEx tackles top tech in Toronto
Learn about new packaging technologies at the upcoming PackEx Toronto 2019 event.

The 2019 PackEx exposition—scheduled for June 4-6 at the Toronto Congress Centre—showcases the latest packaging technologies. Visitors will get a chance to peruse “smart” machines, emerging materials, packaging automation solutions, digital printers and more.

Attendees can connect with suppliers representing an array of product categories. After collecting feedback from past attendees, show organizers have assembled exhibitors from the most in-demand fields, including packaging machinery automation, sustainability, robotics, contract manufacturing and more.

Part of the overall Advanced Design & Manufacturing (ADM) Expo, PackEx will offer a range of advantages for attendees:

Manufacturer exhibits

The expo will host booths from nearly 600 suppliers serving the packaging industry, ranging from small startups to global corporations. Companies on the exhibit roster include Rexroth, A Bosch Co. (Booth 1213), Harpak-ULMA Packaging (Booth 1667), Reiser Canada Co. (Booth 1203), IPL Plastics (Booth 1607), tna North America (Booth 1621), Weber Marking Systems Canada (Booth 1309), UniTrack Corp. Enterprising companies

Produced in partnership with the Canadian government, the Start Up Stadium (Booth 653) showcases a number of packaging-focused startups from the region. During two sessions—10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday—attendees are invited to meet with representatives from these promising firms to discover technology, discuss ideas and network.

In the Tech Theatre (Booth 127), industry professionals will tackle a number of technological trends and concerns. Topics on tap include:

PackEx educational sessions—like the more than 20 scheduled for Centre Stage at Booth 170—offer attendees the opportunity to learn about hot topics, from the latest trends, to tricky technical challenges, to technological advancements on the horizon.

The new Thermocode iQ² thermal transfer printer answers the coding needs of packaging operations with high quality prints at top speeds.

To debut at EastPack 2019 (June 16-18; New York), the Open Date system creates 300-dots-per-inch codes at speeds of 600 prints per minute or more when printing one line of variable text. The Thermocode iQ² maintains speeds of 450 prints per minute when printing two lines of variable text along with a bar code, specifically a GS1 DataBar linear bar code or a two-dimensional GS1 Data Matrix code or stacked code.

The iQ² holds up to 300 megabytes and stored codes can be easily uploaded via a network card or the USB drive. Users can adjust printer settings via the 7-inch color touchscreen, even while the printer is running. The controller also signals printer status, including speed and remaining ribbon.

Able to integrate with most intermittent-motion labeling and other packaging machinery, the iQ² prints on labels, films, foils, cartons and cards for pharmaceutical and other applications.

The quality level of the PAC design submissions is exemplified by 44˚N gin, a globally-recognized packaging winner.

Opening night ceremony for innovative Canadian packaging helps kick off a three-day advanced manufacturing tradeshow in early June.

What’s as good as seeing award-winning-packaging? Celebrating the winners, which is what the PAC Packaging Consortium will be doing on day one of PackEx Toronto during the PAC Canadian Leadership Awards Gala the evening of June 4. Best of Show, Gold and Silver winners will be announced at a gala evening that that starts at 5PM in the Cohen Room located within the Toronto Congress Centre that includes reception, dinner and awards presentation. The category winners have already been announced following the submission deadline of March 31.

The awards are across three groups of Brand Marketing, Package Innovation and Sustainability. The awards’ purpose is to “celebrate craftsmanship in brand package design and innovation with a vision to showcase the power of packaging. We are passionate, holistic industry leaders and our ambition is to create a coveted awards celebration. We demand excellence.”

Shown above is 44˚N gin, a new brand, food and beverage category winner from brand owner Comte de Grasse Distillery, Grasse, France, that was entered by Brooklyn, NY-based forceMajeure Design in partnership with Chic Agency.

According to the designer, “we set out to capture the luminous depth of the Mediterranean sea and the windswept aroma of the French Riviera into a modern luxury design.”

Packaging Digest also learned that the striking blue glass bottles are sourced from Stölzle Glass Group; it’s no surprise to find that the glass maker also supplies bottles to the perfume market.

And giftable carton design perfectly complements the bottle’s look, demonstrating that handsome secondary packaging remains a primary concern in the premium spirits market.

The bottle has also earned acclaim in a land far removed from our northern neighbor: the bottle and packaging design were selected among submissions from 200+ companies worldwide as winner of the Marking Visual Award — a global packaging design competition. The awards were presented during the Food & Beverage Innovation Forum at Hangzhou International Expo Center in China on April 23rd.

Another example in the same category is from Montreal-based Coolway (which Packaging Digest learned was formerly known as Coolwhey Inc.) that was entered by branding agency/designer Bo Branding & Design Agency Ltd. The packaging is designed and manufactured by Stanpac, which is headquartered in Smithville, Ontario.

The gluten/peanut-free, healthier-for-you “proudly Canadian” desserts are available in 12 varieties, all of which boast 28g of protein and 50% less sugar and 280-390 calories per pint.

In addition to the awards, the Toronto Congress Centre hosts PackEx Toronto, which is the packaging centerpiece of a five-in-one comprehensive Advanced Manufacturing event from Tuesday through Thursday June 4-6 that also includes the co-located ATX (automation technology), Design & Manufacturing, Plast-Ex (plastics) and Powder & Bulk Solids.

Over the three days attendees can conduct vetting of potential winning packaging for their own company by walking the aisles and attending educational sessions. The five-in-one trade show is expected to draw 5,500 industry professionals and more than 426 suppliers for three days of education, networking and solution-sourcing.
