Sonoco Institute at Clemson teams with X-Rite

X-Rite, Incorporated the world leader in color management, measurement and communication technologies, today announced that it is partnering with Clemson University’s new Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics to provide the school’s students, faculty, research staff, and corporate partners with the technology and knowledge resources to pursue the most rigorous education and spearhead innovative research in packaging science and technology. X-Rite will supply complete solutions to assist the institute with every facet of color reproduction, from inspiration and design to output, for projects that represent real-world packaging workflows.

The new institute, which will open March 31st, establishes the nation’s first formal collaboration between the disciplines of packaging science and graphic communications. As the new think tank for the packaging industry, the Institute will provide a focus on innovation for the next generation of packaging professionals and will place Clemson University among the world-class institutions serving the future of the printing and packaging industries.

“The Sonoco Institute at Clemson is poised to be the one of the most color-controlled facilities in the industry and X-Rite’s solutions are key to our success. From the tight calibration of all the projectors, displays, and monitors, to the digital calibration of plates and color formulation quality control, X-Rite’s solutions will play a crucial role at every step. With X-Rite’s solutions, any color environment, display, ink system, or printed piece that is within our control will be managed to the best extent that technology allows,” comments Chip Tonkin, Director at the Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics.

The new Sonoco Institute at Clemson will feature X-Rite’s complete range of solutions to address every step of package design and printing workflows.

Color Specification and Accreditation: PANTONE® MATCHING SYSTEM®, PANTONE® Goe™, and Munsell Color Standards -- the international reference and de facto standards for the graphic arts industry. X-Rite’s Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue color vision tests will be widely used in projects pertaining to understanding human color vision and perception.

Color Inspiration and Creation: ColorMunki™ Design – found in the design department of leading packaging brand owners around the world, is the design industry's hottest all-in-one color solution that delivers unparalleled color control and color creation tools for digital workflows.

Color Communication: At the backbone is X-Rite’s patent-pending Color Exchange Format (CxF™), a file format designed to accurately and unambiguously communicate all commercially relevant aspects of color across devices, applications and geographies.

Color Profiling: i1®XTreme, ProfileMaker 5 Packaging software – the go-to solutions for packaging and printing professionals to create custom ICC profiles and manage all aspects of their color managed workflow.

Color Proofing: i1®iO – automated chart reader to measure substrates up to 10mm thick for fast readings of reflective test charts on packaging-specific media.

Plate Control: vipFLEX2 - plate reader for flexographic plate production quality assurance.

Color Formulation: InkFormulation and Color Quality software - for fast, accurate formula creation, storage, approval, retrieval, control and documentation.

Color Reproduction and Output: 530, 939 and SpectroEye™ portable spectrophotometers – the industry’s most accurate, ergonomic, easy-to-use range of portable devices to measure and control color to achieve ISO 12647-2.

The Sonoco Institute, in cooperation with X-Rite’s renowned color experts, will also host a variety of seminars, workshops, and symposia for package printing professionals. During these events, which will be held at Clemson University several times a year, the Sonoco Institute will offer hands-on sessions in color measurement and analysis. Students and industry partners will also learn how color control systems strongly contribute to increase the operational efficiencies of a packaging production workflow.

Using X-Rite’s solutions, the Sonoco Institute will also perform research for corporate and consumer brand owners on future trends in packaging science, design and implementation.

“With the Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics, Clemson University is establishing itself as the emerging leader in the global marketplace of packaging science and graphic communications, and we are proud to be a part of their initiative to better serve the future of the packaging technology and research industry,” comments Tom Vacchiano, X-Rite’s CEO.

Clemson's Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics, a cooperative effort between the university's Departments of Packaging Science and Graphic Communications, is one of the most exciting programs under way at the public research university. The recently completed Harris A. Smith Building will be the new home for the Sonoco Institute.
