The report captures the facts and data behind ConAgra Foods’ commitment to improving not only the food it makes—such as Healthy Choice meals, Chef Boyardee pasta and Hunt’s tomatoes—but its methods and operations in making those well-known brands. The report transparently shows the company’s performance in climate change, packaging, food safety, employee relations, corporate giving and a wide range of other important topics.

In the area of environmental protection and resource conservation, ConAgra Foods has many initiatives under way to conserve energy, reduce waste and save precious resources. These efforts are represented by packaging, product and supply chain improvements. For example, the company’s Hunt’s ketchup bottle has received international recognition for its more environmentally friendly packaging design, and ConAgra Foods’ frozen food trays are the first in North America to use post-consumer recycled material, an effort that is expected to eliminate eight million pounds of landfill waste annually.

With regard to social well-being, the company is leading the charge to raise awareness of the issue of childhood hunger in America—fighting to nourish kids’ bodies and minds today, so they have the opportunity to flourish later in life. The ConAgra Foods Foundation is focused on combating child hunger and enabling nutrition education programs and services. In the last dozen years, ConAgra Foods has provided more than 166 million pounds of food to families in need, and it has donated more than $25 million in grants to support programs and initiatives that feed children and families in need.

In preparing its report, ConAgra Foods followed the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines, which provide a framework and performance indicators for reporting. ConAgra Foods has self-declared a “B” application level for its 2008 Corporate Responsibility Report. More information on this initiative is available at www.globalreporting.org.
