Kraft Canada to pilot new green energy solution for packaging process

Kraft Canada and Bullfrog Power announce a 100 percent ‘green’ natural gas and 100 percent green electricity pilot program for the baking and packaging processes for Dad’s Cookies.  Bullfrog Power's generators will inject 100 percent green natural gas--as well as 100 percent green electricity--into the respective natural gas and electricity systems to match the amount of gas and electricity used by Dad's Cookies' baking and packaging processes. To identify the Dad's Cookies products manufactured and packaged through the pilot program, KraftCanada will place the bullfrogpowered logo on packages. Packages bearing the logo will be available in stores in April 2011.

Green natural gas is produced by capturing and cleaning the gas produced through the decay of organic matter in the everyday waste stream. It is then injected onto the national gas pipeline, providing a clean and renewable alternative to fossil fuel-based natural gas. Unlike conventional natural gas, green natural gas does not increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and therefore helps prevent climate change. Bullfrog's green natural gas service will be launched to the public later in 2011.

"The main cause of increasing carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere is the burning of fossil fuels, including natural gas," says Ed Whittingham, executive director, the Pembina Institute. "We are excited that Bullfrog Power is capturing wasted gas from landfills and putting this to good use in our homes and businesses. Further expansion of this product to other biogas sources promises to be an important energy solution that will help address climate change. We applaud Kraft for their leadership in working with Bullfrog on this pilot program."

"We believe organizations have an important role to play in managing emissions to help address climate change," says Dino Bianco, president, Kraft Canada. "At Kraft Canada, we identified energy as one of one of our six areas of focus back in 2007 and to date, we have focused on energy reduction in our manufacturing facilities. Working with Bullfrog is a natural next step-we further reduce our emissions footprint, support the growth of renewable power in Canada and ultimately help to create a cleaner, healthier environment."

The decision to bullfrogpower the Dad's Cookies line complements Kraft Canada's environmental strategy, which aims to reduce Kraft Canada's energy use and energy-related carbon dioxide emissions by 25 percent, water consumption by 15 percent and solid waste by 15 percent, and eliminate 150 million pounds of packaging material by 2011 based on 2005 levels.

Dad's bakes its cookies in two Toronto area facilities-the Lakeshore bakery and Scarborough bakery. Both facilities have undertaken energy reduction projects, from lighting conservation and upgrading to oven optimization, and continue to identify opportunities to further reduce their energy consumption.
