Toy maker LEGO Group is preparing to invest $1 billion to establish a new US manufacturing location at the Meadowville Technology Park in Chesterfield County, VA, a release issued by Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced Wednesday.

“This transformational project will create more than 1,760 jobs and bolster Virginia’s manufacturing industry,” Gov. Youngkin said in a statement.

The 1.7 million sq ft plant will be carbon neutral and include an onsite solar energy park, the company said in its own release. Work is slated to commence this fall and reach completion by the second half of 2025.

“Our factories are located close to our biggest markets which shortens the distance our products have to travel. This allows us to rapidly respond to changing consumer demand and helps manage our carbon footprint,” said Carsten Rasmussen, chief operations office for LEGO Group, in a statement. “Our new factory in the US and expanded capacity at our existing site in Mexico means we will be able to best support long-term growth in the Americas. We are fortunate to find a location where we can begin construction quickly and create temporary capacity in under two years.”

During the project, LEGO Group said it will establish a temporary packaging site in an existing building in early 2024, creating up to 500 jobs. Outside of the Americas region, the company is currently expanding factories in Europe, China, and Vietnam.

Based in Denmark, LEGO Group sells its products in over 130 countries.
