Sustainable packaging: Winn-Dixie introduces new reusable bag for Earth Day
January 30, 2014
Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc. introduced the newest design and feature in its line of durable, reusable bags for Earth Day. The bag, made from 95 percent recycled material, features Microban antibacterial protection which actively protects the bag from stain- and odor- causing bacteria, and continuously stops the growth of new bacteria. Winn-Dixie is the first retailer in the Southeast to offer this built-in technology which will not wash off or wear away for the lifetime of the bag.
The eco-friendly tote, showcasing Earth Day designs created by the children of Winn-Dixie associates, holds the same amount of groceries as three plastic grocery bags and is available at all locations with a special promotion of five bags for $5. A new baby-themed reusable bag, also featuring Microban, is now available for purchase as well.
The Jacksonville, Fla.-based grocer is focused on other aspects of sustainability too, ranging from reducing energy use to recycling. Recently, the company received the Environmental Protection Agency’s GreenChill Certification at its new Covington, La., store. Currently, only 26 supermarkets in the entire nation have been able to qualify for the prestigious award.
Winn-Dixie has also implemented a Food Recovery Program to provide perishable items to local Feeding America affiliate food banks in the company’s five-state operating area. Approximately 3.5 million pounds of usable food has been donated to feed the hungry since the program’s pilot launched in Jan. 2009.
“We are committed to increasing and enhancing our sustainability efforts in every area of our operation,” said Robin Miller, Winn-Dixie’s director of communications. “Our customers and our Associates are passionate about the environment and very supportive of our programs and initiatives. It’s all part of being a good neighbor on both a local and global level.”
